Shopping, snooze and chocolate: simple urges are key to a happy life. Brits just need to learn to avoid that guilty feeling.
Back in May Gü installed a giant drum kit on a billboard in central London to show that giving into our urges makes us happier.
The research, carried out by Gü Puds, found that on average those who give in to their urges are a happier bunch of people, compared to just over 1 in 4 claiming to be happier despite exercising restraint.
Leading neuroscientist, Dr Jack Lewis, who is working with Gü, explains, “There is a body of evidence suggesting that resisting temptation actually makes us angry! Most things are fine in moderation and giving in to our relatively innocent urges, particularly when times are tough, is a great way to reward ourselves for a job well done. When it comes to guilt, during childhood we learn to categorise behaviours as either ‘good’ or ‘bad’. We feel guilty when giving into the impulse to do things we know are ‘bad’. We can avoid the guilt by using these treats as a reward for ‘good’ behaviours.
