  • Nice, I think this is a great piece. Could have used a bit cleaner editing, but I think you're on the right track, keep up the good work. I used to live in Shanghai and can definitely relate to what you're saying. Best of luck there,

  • i was very interested in this video. I feel sheriff did a very good job. the backgroud music was well chosen, also. i was in china one year ago and i was interested in this . I thought his clip about going from mao to mall was clever and true. One of the best video tags i've ever seen. joyce jerge
  • I liked your film. Nice images + great content.
Lyrical music under VO can be a little distracting.

  • China is such a complicated place for sure...but with all the attention it has been getting recently from the media (check out Frontline's website) and the fact that we are always buying products made there, I am more interested in what the effect of all this change is on the Chinese people, and if they are aware of what their government is doing to them by allowing capitalistic enticements to seduce them.

  • Thank you all for your comments. What I was trying to express with this video is the underling modernity that inevitably comes with economic development and modernization. What I mean by modernity is a change in demeanour and psyche of people because of all the changes that come in so many forms (work, residence, spirtitaul fullfillment and relationships). China is a really good case because it's happeing so fast and it's somewhat apparent but I think this happening all over the world.

  • I really enjoyed this piece. Enjoy teaching in China. Where did you edit?

  • It's funny you asked me about the editing because I was very lucky to have one of my friends here at the university, that I teach at, is the lab assistant at the media lab so I was able to do it there.

By the way I don't need to tell you how great your piece is I think the response you got speaks for its self. I think you probably already know this but I thought I might mention it. I am from San Francisco and on Mt. Davison in SF there is a huge cross (it can be easly seen by airplans) commemorating the Armnian genocide.

  • Having lived in China for almost one year, I can understand the changes the country is going through. Because the changes are so swift and on a grand scale, we are all affected. One example of this is recent price hikes in metals and oil.
  • Very well done!!!!! I will be looking forward to your next documentary. You have a nice touch with the camera as your medium. I liked the commentary, I also liked the student interviews. I hope this video is widely viewed. This is very interesting subject matter...

  • VERY NICE; pace, narration, images, even the message and it's timely unfolding. I was in Shanghai and Bejing for a few days each; I hope to teach in China for a year or two after I retire; unfortunately, they dont seem to be looking for drama or video teachers!

  • It is really very good,Sherif! As a Chinese, I can see the vedio objectively reflects the real life of common Chinese people and the development of China.Of course, China has been making great progress, and if your next vedio of the same subject is made sometime later, I'm sure the progress of China will be self-evident.What's more, I admire your skills in making the vedio!

  • I really liked it! What an interesting perspective! There are so many things I'd like to ask, but I suppose this isn't the forum and I'll just have to go someday to get my own answers. Greenlight.
  • Wonderfully put together view of a country we still need to know more about. Good insight & interviews with a nice personal touch. Definitely worth the GL.
  • Nice insight, I like to see the effects on other communities of globalization. For every loss and gain in one town another gains and loses. Nice work, keep it up, educate, learn and see.
  • Wow! this story is so interesting. Informative and compelling. It's wonderful to see that not only are you teaching english, your teaching american's about the trials the people go thru in china with great footage. The song that you use is also perfect for this piece.
want to see this on air for sure!
    great job sherif!

  • narrative seems monotone, but besides that... Greenlight.
  • This is brilliant. We're seeing someone interact with a culture and post it. Adding to the international conversation. Xie xie! Bao zhong, Sherif. Keep your guanxi plentiful out there. Hope to see more pods.
  • I am interested in teaching in China as well and wanted to know how you got into it and what organization you went through? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
  • Well thecountry, I actually just found this job on the internet @ daveseslcafe.com.....schools, universities in China as well as agents that work between you and the school post hundreds of postings every week there and you can just directly email them. As far as where to go in China...I think it's like a hit and miss kinda thing...you're going on an adventure by going there anyway so I think that's part of it. But my 2 cents is...the further you are from big coastal cities the more interesting because they have not become completely modern just yet...and the people are more friendly to foreigners there. I've heard some bad stories about the south but that's all I know. My school treated me pretty good although we had a few rough spots.....but you can always find leave your school and go somewhere else the demand for native English speakers is huge now. Good luck let me know if you need anymore advice my email is ssoliman333@hotmail.com

  • I live in Shanghai and have felt some of what Sherif is talking about though I am sure that Wuhan is less Western and more Chinese than Shanghai. The video is nicely done. Of course, a more professional crew, etc would have been nice, but you probably would not have gotten the naturalness that you did. The disappearance of the street was something I have seen here several times. I always want to know what happens to the people whose livelihoods have disappeared as well. Keep making and posting on your life there. It is very interesting and a great way to show the world a different face from the tourist postcards most people see from Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai. Hen hao! Xie Xie.
