Ok yes, so maybe enforcing longer leaves for soldiers was a backhanded way for the Democrats to force the president into involuntary troop reductions since fewer would be eligible by law to return to war zones. But the Republican party, by killing this bill, which would have guaranteed soldiers the same amount of time at home as they spent in a war zone, and by the President's hints of a veto of it, seem to have recast themselves as the "war" party, rather than the "military" party. If they really cared about the military and the effects this war is having on the families of service men and women, supporting this bill was a no brainer.
