Being Lolita In Tehran

Adriancito
Alas, Mary Magdalene speaks Farsi.

This is the first of a quite heartbreaking series about the dismal and almost definitively hopeless lives of prostitutes eking out shadow lives in Iran. If you don't feel absolute heartache more than purely reactionary horror at the sight of the two Iranian women getting high right in front of their beautiful children... Unforgettable, truly.

Boukra insh'allah --- 'tomorrow in God's will"... And I guess I'll also throw in a little 'heaven help' while I'm at it.

    • and it was a popular name among Christians until the 4th century. It was even used as a name for Christ. It was demonized when Bishop Lucifer of Cagliari became very vociferous against the then popular Arian Heresy (which claimed that Jesus was a man and not God). Jerome, who was part of the Arianists and who translated the Bible from Greek into Latin, demonized Bishop Lucifer by introducing his name in connection with Satan in his translation of the Bible. Bishop Lucifer was excommunicated and then exiled by the then Arianist Church Fathers in Milan.

With regard to associating Mary Magdalene with prostitution, it is a relatively recent Catholic association which does not permeate the whole spectrum of Christianity.

As for using the name "Lolita", obviously you care since you used it! Perhaps you ought to read the book so that you can understand why you used it inappropriately. We are not mind-readers, so how can we guess what play on "Being Lolita in Tehran" (and not "Reading Lolita in Teheran" as you incorrectly wrote even though your original title was different) you thought of when you wrote it? Having read the book myself and having known its author when I was a child, I truly could not see the connection between your title and the video.

      Good grief indeed!

    • Well, Vierotchka -- 'Mary Magdalene' because just as 'Judas' is a Biblical name that has come to be associated with traitorous tendencies, and just as 'Lucifer' actually was originally a poetic name for 'morning star' but has come to connote something far more sinister---you know, actually, arguing the semantics is idiotic. The POINT was to call attention to the terrible plight of these Iranian women---who the hell cares about how the name of Lolita, a FICTIONAL 'barely pubescent girl', factors into the POINT of the post. Jesus Christ, man...wait---maybe you wanna comment on the 'inapprorpriate' usage of that, too...? Plus overall you missed the whole play on 'Reading Lolita In Tehran'. Good grief.

    • Why "Mary Magdalene"? She was not a prostitute, nowhere in the Bible is it even remotely hinted that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. In fact, she was a highly educated and financially independent woman and one of Jesus' closest followers.

Why "Lolita"? Lolita was not a prostitute, she was a barely pubescent girl.

    • This is truly an unbelievable piece of documentary television. Watch this and be touched by the reality of the human condition in a way that I'll wager you've not experienced for some time.

    • People need to see this. They need to understand that the Iranian Government turns its eyes away from the horrible. I hated to watch it but I know it's important.
