Young, Gay, Homeless

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) homeless youth often endure disproportionate hardships because of their sexual orientation; they not only face the obstacle of surviving on the streets but also the stigma of belonging to a sexual minority. Violence and harrasment in homeless shelters causes many LGBT youth to choose the streets. As a result, they suffer from higher rates of physical and sexual victimization, addictive substance abuse, psychopathological disorders, and riskier sexual behavior (National Gay and Lesbian Task Force 2007). To combat this problem, many cities have opened LGBT specific shelters, but Chicago has yet to follow. Since Chicago streets are dangerous and youth shelters equally so, many kids are left with no alternatives.

    • I like it. Good topic I enjoy digging into other lives. Possible improvement would be to allow the interviews to drive the show versus the VO.

      Woody, thanks for sharing this video with me, I checked it out earlier in the week. It was very moving. We have many homeless youth in our town and I am sure that a number of them are gay.

      Some of the most rewarding talks that I have given on HIV education was at a home for sex offender youths. Based on the cards and notes that I received from those kids, they felt connected to what I shared and took hope from what I said.

      It takes a tremendous amount of courage to be gay and homeless.

    • Until people are willing to admit that people are born gay. etc. these people are going to be maltreated. We as a people need to grow up. Why do some people have the need to feel superior to other people? Learn to accept everyone the way they are and get on with your life.
