Charter That...a new direction for New Orleans education?

BillDelano
With high dropout rates facing many comunities this electoral season, I set out to tell the story of a new Charter school in my hometown that is virtually eliminating the problem.

In 2004 the Annie E Cassie Foundation ranked Louisiana 49th in the nation at giving public school children a chance for success. Luckily, due to Hurricane Katrina, New Orleanians have been given a second chance and are using new Charter Legislation to send more than half their kids to Charter Schools. Here's a look inside one of them.

    • Sorry, I think tax money should be spent on public schools. I sent my children to Catholic schools. I paid for it. You want private be willing to pay, don't drain public schools of funds for charter or private schools. It will turn into a have and have nots mess.

    • Charter school as a great option for improved public education. My children were raised in a private Montessory and since it is very expensive, I was very glad when the local school dsitrict made it a charter school. My children are able to be educated with high academics in a program that runs at their own individual learning style and speed without the price tag of a private institution. In charter schools, parent involved really matters; class sizes are smaller and this matters to our children educational experiences. Charter schools still have to comply with the "standards" set by CDE, but "there different and better ways to arrive to the same goal".

    • GoAhead, You are right and after the disaster they just rolled in the privatized schools, We are in line to get the Neo Cons dream Private army, private Police, private fire department, etc., etc., etc. You need it you pay for it. Say that with feeling, you will get used to it. Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reed should resign so we could get someone in their jobs that would do them. If we don't impeach we are going to be in more trouble than we can handle, might already be there.

    • Looks like the Bushovites tricked us into doing what they had in mind all along. Now the NEO cons can point to NO and say, "See, we were right all along," and all they had to do was pull the incompetent act and blame the gov'ment as Molly Ivans used to say.

    • Charter schools are a pretty hot topic, and I don't feel I know as much about this option as I should... What are thoughts/opinions on charter schools? Will they be the saviors or the downfall of traditional public schools? And is that good or bad?
