Punishment for severe crimes should be severely punished, but not by death. Read this article about a man who has 'pulled the switch' and what he now feels about his job.
The United States is one of a few nations that still kill people for killing people. The United States is one of the biggest, if not, THE biggest incarceration countries in the world. Why? Pretty simple: The US legal system needs to be self nourishing, creating jobs and taking people out of the job market to reduce unemployment. More prisons, more guards, more judges more lawyers, more police, more laws, more buildings, more, more and more. Then, the prisoner works for 10 cents an hour to build furniture and items for the system that locked them up (at least it keeps em busy). prisons were supposed to protect us from violent people...75% of incarcerated people are non violent offenders.
Moreover, I keep hearing over and over again of prosecutors that turn a blind eye when evidence not only suggests innocence, it proves beyond a reasonable doubt the accused is in fact, innocent. Why do they do this? well, it looks good on their resumes...another 'notch' on their holster... and when they run for public office, they can say they were 'tough' on crime.
Prosecutors are public servants, like the police. There needs to be some rules enforced and/or enacted that ends aggressive and career building orientated wrongful prosecutions. And, severe punishment for doing so. I would suggest the punishment should be exactly equal to the punishment they were trying to get for the wrongly accused if they did hide evidence, or plant evidence to get that conviction.
btw, sorry to have gotten slightly off subject, but do go and click the link to read his story!

first let me say i love this story for me it shows a piece of light in a very dark practice. this mans faith and willingness to share that faith with murderers being taught not to murder by being murdered, was a solace to me. at least the executioner had real piety and remorse for our actions as a society and his enactment of our will. prisons are quit the industry here in america. http://current.com/items/87274501_can_this_be_3_states_permanantly_revoke_voting...
it is a political tool to disenfranchise a large portion of the "wrong type of voter" it is a political tool to sway the masses

the bottom line really seems to be conspiracy folks 10 naysayers 0
or to put it plainly the only real war really seems to be a class war and all the rest is smoke and misdirection.
it starts at the top. we must put a stop to corpocracy in america. we need the rights promised by our constitution and we need to take away the rights of corporations if we want real change to come.

this link shows how corporations got their "rights"
but back to the subject at hand sorry for all the links and stream of thought response but this story has me charged up and on fire. it is my heartfelt opinion that ALL life is sacred and sacrosanct.
it is difficult to resist the urge to punish violence with violence, but ultimately the lesson learned, is violence, when you do. - 4 years ago

It is like in the Golden Compass when the Magesteirum wanted to sever the ties of its people with their animal spirits. Aha, the animal spirits are like their conscience.

Have any of you heard about Stanley Milgram? He conducted a series of experiments to see why and how people can be obedient to authority and kill or injure others without seemingly having a conscience about it.
Check out this link to information about his experiment.
Apparently he found that people were willing to pull the switch provided that they were assured that they bore no moral responsibility for it; even if they objected at first and felt bad. Once they were assured that they could not be held accountable, they were willing to pull the lethal switch.
Crazy stuff we humans are capable of when our conscience is removed. hmmm
