Protest Photography

New York photographer Fred Askew has seen his work published all over the show, including Time, The Village Voice, and El Pais. His witty and succinct photos take in demonstrators at rallies, sit-ins and protest campaigns, and have enormous personality and verve. Check out this very cool lady's passive-aggressive badge (pic).

    • for me xenodao the horror starts with the countless violations of human rights and moral standards our leaders are blatantly responsible for. the too thin facade of deception. the fact that war is not about liberation but economics? or that like mm pointed out our current administration literally stole the presidency? or how about water boarding? how about the loss of the constitution our founding fathers left to protect us from a corrupt government? or corporate human and global gaia violations? there really is much to be concerned about... i think. i mean looking positive and being happy only goes so far before it too is a blindfold. and to look happy when your message is stop this madness of greed and murder? c'mon.

    • I'm not pissed, I don't see anything to be pissed about. I hear about all the horrible things happening but when I turn off the media and look outside everything seems just like it's always been, with the exception of people being a little more paranoid towards each other. Maybe I'm just not "informed" enough.

    • Well, Xenodao, you're right, but this IS serious business. Aren't you pissed? I'm scowling now just thinking about it. But, you're right. We take our rights for granted, even as they are being stripped.

    • How come people in protest pictures never look happy. You'd think they would be a little more grateful they live in a country where people can protest without being killed.
