In a surprise decision for Democrats on the Hill, Bush will veto the War spending bill. The Iraqi government objected to language in the bill that would make Iraqi funds in U.S. banks vulnerable to lawsuits from opressed Iraqi's under Sadam Husane's control. The Iraqi's threatened to remove billions from the U.S. banks if the bill was not changed.
Democrats had no indication the president disapproved of this version of the bill until his veto announcement. Democrats agreed to remove the Matthew Shepard act, also known as hate crimes legislation, from an earlier version to appease Bush's homophobia. The hate crimes legislation would have expanded the federal definition of a hate crime to include protection for gays and lesbians. Democrats are now faced with a disappointed segment of their voting base, and a war spending bill that was vetoed anyway.
