Former US presidential candidate urges Bush's impeachment

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? Former US presidential candidate George McGovern on Sunday called for President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney to be impeached, saying the case for such a dramatic step "is far stronger" than it was against former disgraced president Richard Nixon.

A former US congressman and senator, McGovern was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1972, but lost the election to incumbent Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign amid the Watergate scandal in 1974.

Writing in The Washington Post, McGovern said that after the 1972 election, he stood clear of calls to impeach Nixon because he was afraid it would be interpreted as an act of personal vengeance.

But "today I have made a different choice," the prominent Democrat points out. "The case for impeaching Bush and Cheney is far stronger than was the case against Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew after the 1972 election."

    • I agree with Mr. McGovern. There's far too much evidence to just "let it go" If we do that then we're guilty too and send a message to every future administration that nothing is going too far. I agree with the comment about Iran. It's frightening how badly they'd like to start dropping bombs there too. Enough! IMPEACH NOW!!!!

    • Questions have remained, unanswered. Mainstream media doesn't even try to get answers to the questions. People with voices have asked questions about the constitutionality of George W.'s actions. Mainstream media doesn't ask them to follow up with facts.
Facts repeated may resonate and counter their spin (distorting facts). They choose to ignore the facts and spin, spin and fact as equal. They lead Americans to believe, 'Nothing to see here, move along, and we do?'
Mainstream media not reporting facts, doesn't change the facts, it fools people into thinking the facts aren't worth being reported. They are acting as judge and jury for the citizens in America. Mainstream media is not responsible for judging the facts. It is their responsibility to report facts.
America needs to hold mainstream media accountable. People with voices need to challenge the spin, not accept it in silence. Facts are facts; spin is spin distorting facts.

    • We have to have the hearings. Maybe they won't be impeached, but the law requires we try. People need to know what has been going on or they will continue. How would you like it if they managed to attack Iran because we didn't keep them busy and worried about impeachment?

    • Impeachment is equivalent to indictment. Returning to the rule of law should mean that reasonable suspicion should result in indictment, and trial, with conviction or aquital in before the Senate being the result. America needs to return to a faith in the system, George McGovern's arguments for impeachment are the most honest and the most compelling. America does not believe that politics and justice can coexist. We should give that coexistence another chance.
      "It's the system stupid".
I didn't think it was worth the trouble but now I do. The Rule of Law needs to be reinstated.

    • You may be right Conniepae, but the more representatives calling for impeachment mean that if nothing else there will be an investigation. Even if it's after the elections - fine, as long as they're held accountable.

    • I don't know that Impeachment is the answer either. Any effort to impeach would take until after the 2008 election. Accountability and unanswered questions, answered is another issue. I think it is Congress's duty to investigate. Impeachment is an end product to the 'Rule of Law'. The 'Rule of Law' applies to Presidents also. A jury of their piers should judge this administration. Congress is one of the three branches of government, making them a jury of his piers.
I have heard the argument that an investigation would affect too many people. We should not ignore wrongdoing because too many are guilty. That is what is called, cleaning house. We may need to clean our own house, before we go abroad.
