Iran: "US Navy Video Is A Clumsy Fake"

Iran has called the grainy video and audio released by the Pentagon, allegedly showing Iranian Revolutionary Guard Boats confronting US warships, "fabricated" and accused America of using archive footage to stitch them up.

"The footage released by the U.S. Navy was compiled using file pictures and the audio has been fabricated," the English-language channel Press TV quoted a senior in the Revolutionary Guards as saying.

"The voices and pictures broadcast by the Pentagon about the latest incident have been fabricated so clumsily that the pictures and voices in the video are not even synchronized," added the source.

US National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley echoed President Bush's earlier description of the Iranian move as "provocative."

"This is a provocative act - not a smart thing to do, and they are going to have to take responsibility for the consequences, if they do it again," Hadley said, adding that his comments should not be seen as a threat.

On Tuesday, The Pentagon released a short video that showed Iranian speed boats nipping around US warships in the Persian Gulf, with audio of heavily-accented English threatening, "I am coming to you. ... You will explode after ... minutes." In the video, the Iranian boats appear to ignore repeated warnings from the US ships.

    • "Iran'd be really in for it!" What are we going to give it to them with? Our military is stretched so thin already we can't handle what we have started. Guess we will have to nuke them and start WWIII, Great idea.

    • I doubt it's faked until I see all counter vailing evidence that the Pentagon staged it. Let's not have another nutty movement within the 9/11 truther submovement of the anti-globalization movement! No more movements making proclimations. Just callllllmmm doooowwwnnnnnn....

At the same time, it's striking the timing of New York Mayor Bloomberg's announcment of his potential candidacy in March after the Dems and GOP finish duking it out. I doubt he has anything to do with this but it makes his candidacy more relevant now comparing the future of foreign policy as it'll likely continue with a Hillary or McCain presidency.

I worry his news network is running the footage a lot spun from the global business point of view. Very troubling, indeed. I reckon he's a different kind of politician with his moderate independant non-party strengths over the two institutional parties (esp. if Hagel ran with him), but if the guy won... Iran'd be really in for it!

    • Is anyone really surprised? Mark my words, we will bomb Iran before the 2008 election. Bush may use this as an excuse for martial law prior to Obama/Clintons' inauguration.

    • Too bad they didn't get the same guy that drew the mobile lab pictures. They might have been more believable. The economy is tanking the usual cure is to go to war. I wonder if that works when you are so deep in debt no one wants your money? Pity the poor bastards that stole the nine billion in Iraq, it's only worth four and a half billion now.

    • It's not real. If Bushenney can fabricate weapons of mass destruction as a pretext for war, why not have a few of the guys get in the water with blue boat and pretend to be Iranian national guard or whatever.

How can you trust a pathological administration and media?

    • This would not surprise me one bit. Bush is hankering for an excuse to attack Iran and get himself and his war-profiteering buddies another war.

    • Here's the video that the Pentagon released. I'm not really sure you can tell much of anything from this. It's really difficult to be able to identify the small boats. And the rough edit from the moving image to a stock shot of a boat with dodgy audio is certainly enough to keep me skeptical of its authenticity.
