"There are powerful reasons to believe that terror networks around Baitullah Mehsud were responsible," said one American intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
The official said that "different pieces of information" had pointed toward Mr. Mehsud's responsibility, but he would not provide any details.
The conclusion of the CIA is also in agreement with the assertion from the Pakistani government, which claimed shortly after the assassination that Mehsud was responsible.

What did this kid look like, Voyager? It might be the same asshole who used to pick on me. And I know for a fact that he hung out with Islamic fundamentalists, North Vietnamese, and Soviet communists, so I think it really WAS him. I don't remember what happened to him, though. The last I heard, he was recruited into some secret government organization...

Right, trust the CIA - fat chance Sherlock!
I'd heard the Iranians were behind it - together with Al Queda and Iraqi insurgences. Oh ya, North Korea also. Are we still at odds with North Vietnan, cause I think their involved - and the Nazi party, and the USSR, Hummas, the PLO, and that kid that used to bully me in 3rd grade, what's his name? and... the re-incarnation of Sadan SoInsane - but I guess that's still top secret.

"There are POWERFUL REASONS to believe" that Al Qaeda was responsible. Damned right. Those POWERFUL REASONS are called the President of the United States and the military industrial complex.
But I should be fair and admit that I don't know shit about who is really behind the assassination. It just seems way too convenient that we point the finger at the same culprits that Musharraf--whom we need as an ally to keep the situation in Afghanistan under relative control--is accusing. Plus we get the added bonus of fingering Al Qaeda to give this whole "war on terror" thing more credibility.
Of course it COULD HAVE happened exactly as the C.I.A. says it did. I just find it much more likely that Musharraf himself was behind it, having recognized Bhutto as a threat and having gotten the wink from the U.S. military leadership that if he took her out we would not point the finger at him. But again, this is just pure speculation that's coming straight out of my ass, and I don't even know why I'm bothering to comment on this. I'm just bored and cynical.
