Can't the Democratic hopefuls play nice?

Obama said a Clinton presidency would be a step back to the past, turning her husband's image of a bridge to the future against her. "I know it is tempting — after another presidency by a man named George Bush — to simply turn back the clock, and to build a bridge back to the 20th century."
"... It's not enough to say you'll be ready from Day One — you have to be right from Day One," he added in unmistakable criticisms of Clinton.
For someone who spends a lot of time criticizing Mrs. Clinton for her "dirty politics", he sure spends a lot of time slinging that democratic mud. But within hours, the provoked Hillary Clinton pushed back in an interview with the AP — and got in her own dig.
"That certainly sounds audacious, but not hopeful," said Clinton, in a play on the title of Obama's book, "The Audacity of Hope." "It's not hopeful and it's not what we should be talking about in this campaign," said Clinton, suggesting Obama was abandoning the core of his campaign.

the dirty politics were started by clinton. Obama has no choice but to respond. He could not respond at all, but then that would be a quiet validation of all the false statements she has made. So he has to set the record straight and show distinctions, I agree.
Don't be fooled, Clinton is a really good politician, she has forced Obama into a corner where he can't help but seem to contradict what he stands for. But he has no choice. This is a race for PRESIDENT, he can't back down.
I do however have the concern, which I'm wondering if all of you do, that this doesn't look like the unifying democratic party that we desperatley need in the general election. I really hope that who ever "loses" will show strong support for any nominee as John Edwards has.
Lets not get too personal Clintobama. Hillarack.... ok that didn't work.

I agree that having all the candidates sling mud at eachother and 'play dirty' is terrible. However, I would rather hear Obama throw out a criticism like "You have to be right on Day One" than have him not do it. It's the candidate's job to present those distinctions and point out the flaws in their opponents. Could you imagine a candidate just throwing out slogans and statements without the opposition challenging them?
When the attacks are dishonest and simply an attempt to generate negative publicity or put your opponent on the defensive and not to actually offer some sharp, strategic criticism than I think that shows you a little bit about the kind of character that candidate has and how they would treat their opposition in office. but I don't really see anything that isn't fair game here.

They are competing for the highest profile job in the world. Do you think it's even possible to play nice?
Is it possible to disagree without being disagreeable?
Wouldn't that seem a little fake? It's like we have amnesia in this country. I can't even watch the mainstream news channels anymore. This vocabulary of 'slamming', 'attacking', 'slinging' is just sensationalizing discourse. Every candidate has been and will continue to 'play dirty' - some more than others. If anyone thinks any of the candidates can play this game and still come out clean they are being naive.
