Honey Bunches of Votes

This pod aired on Current TV under the same name.
The youth vote is gaining more and more momentum. Follow a bunch of Los Angeles college students to their "debate tailgate" and hear why you need to vote if you're a student, and if you're a candidate, you better be paying attention to them.

THIS IS SO AWESOME!!! Thanks Julie (and Julian and everyone else who worked on this) for making so professional and super sweet. This shows how young people all over the nation are responding to the elections. We're engaged and excited, so watch out- we're voting!

Overall, a really great upload. I thin it is great that you are capturing what is going on in the world in concern to young voters. A lot of people don't realize how involved young voters are in this election, but you got the info out there! My only critique of your piece is its lack of a central character. I know it is hard to focus on a single person for something like this, but perhaps you can find something in your footage. Great job overall!

This was a great stab at uploading "breaking" news pods!
You really captured some of the excitement and hope that were at this debate and rally.
Some more establishing shots -- pictures of the crowd, screaming, yelling, would've been a great addition.
Also, I think in about 5 years, "young" voters will outnumber every single other demographic group in this country -- including baby boomers. As a voting bloc, they will have incredible power. It would be interesting to see how aware people in that age range are of just *how* powerful they will be in a few short years.

I thought this was really interesting, and I think it really is true that in this election the students are very important. I loved seeing all the different, clever ways the students came up with to stand out. The Vote Goat was definitely and interesting idea.
I did feel like there was a lot of time just spent looking at talking heads, though. Part of it was just the nature of the piece, but I feel like it would have been a little bit more visually interesting if there had been some shots intercut with or playing over the interviews.

This piece is really great! Students are an important, yet neglected part of this story. Not only are students the future but they make up a powerful 25% of electorate so their views and concerned need to be addressed and covered.

I don't believe that it is apathy that plagues this generation, but rather a sense of helplessness. The politicians do not care about the youth of this country regardless of whatever rhetoric they choose to throw at the public. Money wins elections and that is something in short supply among the youth of this country. I would have like to see a bit more about the organizers and their mission. Very few people are going to argue against the importance of voting and we have seen these efforts to make voting hip for decades now. What is really at the core of the problem is what needs to be explored and discussed.

Who's got the vote? the Youth. I think it is quite wonderful that youth in our country are finally getting involved. As one who has been voting for nearly 30 years, I only hope that you all continue to stay involved through out your lifetime. Your vote is important this year and all the years to come.

Great pod Julie! You really did a good job capturing the voices of today's youth in regard to politics. We don't get that enough and we need more. Hopefully, when people see this it will encourage them and help them to understand their importance. Its sad to say this is still an issue, but who knows, this pod might help to change everything. I would have liked to have heard from someone other than a student, to get an idea of how they felt about the student's opinions/voices. Great job though!

Hi, I'm the CALPIRG organizer in this awesome looking video Julie made. Just wanted to thank you, Julie, for your obvious talent, but also your general excitement in being with us.
This was a great event, a culmination of a semester long campaign of students registering other students and running big get-out-the-vote drives. The energy was there, and it comes through on this great-looking video.
Young people are definitely getting out this year. CALPIRG's New Voter Project has registered over 600,000 people at over 100 campuses across the country since '03. Check out more of us at www.newvotersproject.org and www.calpirgstudents.org
Thanks Julie!

It's SO important to get out the youth vote... always, and especially THIS YEAR, because guess who they're trending for!!! The L.A. Times just now endorsed Obama, and you young pretties better get to it and do it next Tuesday! Again, fine videography. Soller power!

Great coverage!
I think Jweeke makes a good point - it would be cool to see B roll of other media outlets covering these guys (to see if they're really getting the media attention that one girl claims). Maybe it would benefit from someone critical of their aims, like a cynic or an old Republican (heaven forbid!)
On a personal note, am I the only young person who's a little disappointed in my peers for not getting informed until now??? It's great that young people are voting, but I think if our big decision is "Obama or Hillary?" then we're not really doing any better than the Baby Boomers with whom we're so disappointed. All the old people I know are more excited about Obama than anyone... and I still can't figure out why. Maybe if we had done a better job over the last 8 years this election might have been something truly revolutionary, but I think we've already lost it.

That's good, I like the red t-shirts.
I hope the young'ns this time around actually show up. 2004 was a banner year for youth vote, and I expect this to be even moreso.

Nicely done, Julie.
Love the goat. Really love the goat. Do you have more goat?
Also, I'm not sure exactly why they are where they are, and exactly what 'tailgating' means. Are they eating... cereal or something?
Do you have broll of other media covering them?
Finally, forgive me, but that song makes me want to never vote again, out of association.
Alright. I'm just being an ass. Congrats, you've done well.

Very empowering pod. Great to see the excitement. Also interesting to see that the Gen-Yers are blaming it all on the Baby Boomers and not the Gen-Xers. Phew!

Time magazine is already calling this "The Year of the Youth Vote". Let's hope so - these elections and the moves by the next administration (and unfortunately the current ones) are the ones we'll be living through and with as we age, so we might as well speak up for who we want!
