Heart of Bush Country

MitchKoss
If you draw a graph of President George W. Bush's approval ratings from mid-decade to now, it looks like an outline of an Olympic Downhill Skiing run. In Utah, the state where President Bush enjoys his highest approval ratings, Elizabeth Chambers travels to the small northern town of Randolph, the heart of the heart of Bush country, to hear what's on folks' minds.

    • "We don't care about global warming here." That pretty much sums up the whole pod. Bush's stupidity doesn't effect them so they don't couldn't give a rats ass.

    • I live in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Ugh, that was hard to watch I have to be honest. It at times just makes me want to move out of Utah completely and never look back. Living here and seeing people with their blind faith to Bush just blows my mind. No matter what he does or says and they stick by him. I pointed out to one guy about something utterly stupid that Bush did and all he could say was “well its hard being president, nobody is perfect” but 8 years previous this same guy was screaming bloody murder when Clinton was in office. I know more than a few Utah Republicans who think the country would be better if it was a one party, Republican party, system. Sometimes I feel like my home is living in the dark ages.

I’m disgusted that my home state has the highest Bush approval rating. It makes me wonder if people can’t admit they voted for the wrong guy. Maybe it’s a pride issue. Maybe it really is a blind dedication to your party. Who knows.

    • MM: "Some of those people have probably never been out of the county, What do you expect?"

LOL, MM! Apparently 98% ARE out of their minds even if they are still in the county.

Oh, I like the part where the guy was able to exercise his right to BARE arms, too.

At least when Bush has to write his Congressman in Crawford, Texas, he has to write Democratic U.S. Congressman, Chet Edwards.

Hey PYGMY6372, I'd like to see the Brattleboro Police Department arrest them even though there would probably be more Secret Service Agents with Bush than the police force had officers. Bush and Cheney DO deserve to be making license plates somewhere.

    • I was horrified by this pod; the lack of awareness is astounding. It saddens me to see people so taken in with the propaganda, but then again they proabably have never heard of current tv or air america. Fox is probably their main viewing experience. For citizens of this country to believe that we are doing well and on the right track is really scary. I just hope that people in this Utah town and other rural areas start waking up to see what is really going on with all of the corruption and destruction running rampant in our country. We have huge problems and this pod is indicative of the bubble in which so many people live.

    • I don't see how this is journalism. We know people in Utah approve of him, so going around asking people if they approve of him or not dosen't provide us with any real information or perspective.
Why not ask some difficult questions? The guy saying that the national debt is getting better isn't suprising (although it's absolutely wrong), what is suprising is that the Elizabeth doesn't enlighten him or the viewer of the real situation.

I have to say, I agree with John Farris. This piece lacks substance.

    • I've known quite a few people who have never been out of the country and still think that Bush is a failure.

I think that Utah's relatively high approval rating of Bush has to do with people wanting to buy into this whole facade that Bush is a born again Christian. If people really want to believe in something regardless of what common sense tells them, then I'll be damned if you can get them to not believe it. It is good to keep in mind that denial is not just a river in Egypt. (Sadly, I don't think that play on words is nearly as effective when written as opposed to spoken).

    • What Current TV is all about is providing programming in collaboration with its primary targeted demographic – young adults.
All of the Current reporters, including Elizabeth Chambers, were chosen because they appeal to this demographic. If a viewer wants one-sided hard-core news coverage, then they should watch the NBC Nightly News, etc. If a viewer wants stories that look at topics from different perspectives, then they will not be disappointed with Current.

Accordingly, in light of the President’s poor approval ratings, one would expect Current, on behalf of its target audience, to ask the question “If so many disapprove of the Bush presidency, who approves of it?” Certainly, this is a question that none of the major news networks would consider as a suitable topic for broadcast.

Hence, Elizabeth’s story entitled “Heart of Bush Country.” Elizabeth could have as easily found the one place in the country where Bush had a “zero” approval rating. I am sure there would be viewers who would not like that story either.

No matter who is occupying the Oval Office, the news reported by the networks will have a direct affect on the presidents approval rating. If all the news is negative (i.e. troop deaths, sensationalized predictions of a recession etc.) then it can be no surprise that President Bush has become so unpopular. Lest we forget, President Clinton was crucified by the press because of his sexual exploits. Never mind he was actually trying to do good things for the country. If Current was around at the time, I would not be surprised to see a story entitled “Why are young women attracted to much older men?”

Elizabeth Chambers has been a reporter with Current TV for 3 years. She is an experienced professional. If you will look at other stories by Elizabeth, you will see that she is smart, articulate, very personable, and, of course, easy on the eyes. In her other stories, her personality has put the interviewee at ease and Elizabeth is then able to extract information that Current viewers would find relevant and interesting.

Katie Couric, when she hosted the Today Show, used her personality to make the show entertaining and enjoyable to watch. As a result, the number of viewers soared and the Today Show was consistently the number one rated morning show. Like Katie, Elizabeth uses her personality to make the show more interesting and entertaining to watch. So, what is wrong with that?!

    • Did he say the National Debt is getting better? Hmm, I had know idea.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the debt something like 5.7 trillion in 2000 vs. the 9.2 trillion we have today?

That means the gross debt back then was almost equal to the debt held by the public today.

    • I appreciate the guy who spoke about hard work and not depending on other people to do everything for you, but come on, these folks are truly out of touch with reality. they're stubborn (which is not an attack, it can be a good quality) and they basically buy into bumper sticker politics. this is a generalization, but I would be willing to bet that most of these folks are racist. it's unfortunate.

    • Umm john...I don't think Kelly Pickler would use the word reputed. Those two are at opposite ends of the spectrum.SarahBelle hit the nail on head about that state. And elizabeth wasn't 'flirting' but connecting with the men and women she interviewed. Eye opening piece.

    • This is such a lame stereotype piece.

Randolph has 400 people and Miss flirty found 3 or 4 of them to represent the entire state. Pathetic that this is airing in Current's election coverage, especailly on Super Tuesday. This belongs on Leno. A ditzy pretty face flirting with a bunch of "older" Cowboys. And worst of all it doesn't even represent the "so called" Current demographic.

As a frequent visitor to Utah with many friends in the area, I must say this is more of a comedy piece lacking in everything Current TV supposedly stands for!

Current Journalism, you should be embarrassed for airing Leno pieces in your election coverage. Also, get a real journalist, not a brunette Kelly Pickler.

The funniest line of the pod was her saying "Wow." When responding to the 1500 gallons per month statement. Seriously, go back and watch it, it's at the 7:00 minute mark. It tell's you all you need to know about this pod.

    • I voted for Bush twice. And I apologize, too. Of course, I didn't really have another choice the second time around :(

As for Mr. Vest & Gun -- what's he smoking? He stated that the national debt is falling. In fact, it hit a record this week.

    • Ah my home state, so full of sheeple it makes me happy I left. The problem with the Utah attitude [and the main reason I left for good] is an ignorant desire to have the image of perfection. For example, there's a huge smog problem in Utah, but no one would admit it and do anything about it [like LA has done] because that would show an imperfection. While I love cowboys, ranching, and the wild west I think I healthy dose of reality would do my fellow Utahans some good! But then again, this is the state that allowed the Mormon church to BUY Main Street, there may be no hope.

    • The people have the right to bear arms and that's a great thing.

Let's not forget what the President it supposed to do - on behalf of the American people. He is not elected as some sort of fanatical supreme leader to give meaning to the lives of us ignorant slobs. He is there as a representative of the people. Anything more and it violates the principals that made this country great in the first place.

Funny how many people are drawn here for all that makes our country great, then proceed to destroy it, or attempt to destroy it making it like the backward, corrupt, immoral and / or undeveloped nation of desperadoes they come from for personal gain - or worse yet, for the benefit of another nation at the expense of this one.

      Send the traitors away!

    • "How ya like that Al Gore!" A man with a gun on his hip that is a simple clue. Wow, just reminds me of the ignorance embracing this "Spoon fed" country. "Ignorance" is a lack of knowledge by dictionary definition.
Oh yeah, NCLB has just taught our children how to take the test. I wish more people could see what NCLB has cost us and our children's future! It was just a way to take away our Federal funding and make the state pay the difference or not pay.
It should be called NCLD - NoChildLeftADime, or a system designed to fail. If it fails than vouchers for everyone. Corporate America can run the schools then and all will be good...... wow!
      What a beautiful thing, "Ignorance"!

    • I support President George W. Bush. I voted for him twice have no regrets. I do not think of him as my friend I think of him as the head of our governmants Executive branch . I do not want him to be popular, I want him to be an effective leader. Some of the charecteristics of his service as President is that he does not look at opinion polls when he makes a decision. He does not change his mind very often, once his decision is made. As bad as things are in Iraq now I can only imagine the horrific consequences if he changed his mind and caved into popular opinions and pulled out. I am very happy the the No Child Left Behind program has shed light at the conditions of our public school systems across the United States. I think that even though the NCLB program may not fix all of the problems of every educational system, but now we see the conditions of what our children are learning and are not learning. No longer will children be swept through the school systems. Now the schools acroos the counrty are responsible for educating children.

    • Questions: What major sources of Media do they have in Utah? Do they receive "Current" on their cable?
(Aside: "Current" is not available in Tennesee on the Charter cable system. At least, my folks can't find it. They're pretty upset, too.)
