Gordie Brown and Condi Rice meet to bolster Afghan war support

The US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice is to meet the prime minister Gordon Brown in London to bolster support for the Afghanistan war. They'll discuss Nato tensions over countries' provision of fighting troops. They will also look for ways to repair relations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has rejected much of the international strategy for his country. And they are likely to consider how to maintain public support for the war. How do you maintain public support for a war that looks to be hopeless and misguided?

    • Here's hoping, Afghanistan's relations with the western world have been understandably problematic, I really hope that these talks will deliver some results that may actually begin rebuilding not only our diplomatic links with the country, but more importantly, the country itself.

    • Afghanistan seems to be back in the news lately. First Obama talking about how he'd push more troops in and now Brown and Rice getting cosy in the war room.

They've got their work cut out for them. Lots of people are sceptical and resentful over both governments seemingly ignoring voters' concerns and their trigger-happiness over war.
