"Gareth Henry is a prominent gay rights activist in Jamaica, yet after the murder of 13 friends in the past four years, is seeking refuge status in Canada. Henry 22, is a member of the vital Jamaican LGBT rights group JFLAG, an organization that certainly fights an uphill battle. Jamaica is notoriously one of the world's most homophobic country's, with gays and lesbians routinely sentenced to prison terms with hard labor, or worse, victims of homophobic mob attacks. Henry himself was a victim of an attack over last year's St. Valentine's holiday, when a mob of hateful Jamaican's stoned him and two other gay men before forcing them to hide in an area pharmacy. The mob's unruliness warranted tear gas from police, who then escorted the men through the crowd and to safety. Canada is well known for granting asylum to LGBT citizens of homophobic countries, and will most likely allow Henry to stay."
