William Buckley, conservative author and tv host has died. He was found at his desk at his home in Connecticut, and although the cause of death is not immediately known, he suffered from diabetes and emphysema.

From one of the comments on the National Review site: "William F. Buckley's life was marked by enormous joy. He had a lust for life as well as for letters and debate. He raised a wonderful and accomplished son, loved and was loved by, a formidable and beautiful wife, had more friends than he could count or, in a sense even know, and will be remembered for generations to come."

    • It seems odd to cheer for someones death, but upon the news of Buckley's demise the tension in my stomach relaxed ever so slightly.

    • Some of us have a different memory of this "famed scholar:"

"The central question that emerges ... is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not prevail numerically? The sobering answer is Yes — the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race. It is not easy, and it is unpleasant, to adduce statistics evidencing the cultural superiority of White over Negro: but it is a fact that obtrudes, one that cannot be hidden by ever-so-busy egalitarians and anthropologists. (National Review, August 27, 1957). "

    • The obit from the NY Times: "Mr. Buckley’s greatest achievement was making conservatism — not just electoral Republicanism, but conservatism as a system of ideas — respectable in liberal post-World War II America."
