Israel continues airstrikes in Gaza

"Palestinian militants in Gaza fired four rockets into the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon on Thursday, hitting a house, the Israeli police said. Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least 11 Palestinians, including four young boys, Palestinian medical officials said.

"No one was hurt in the attacks on Ashkelon, but the attack will probably be seen in Israel as an escalation of the conflict. Ashkelon, a city of 120,000 people, has been an occasional target of rockets in the past, but the scale of attacks on Thursday was unprecedented."

    • I agree with you mjsmith11. Americans need to take back America. We do not exist for the benefit of Israel. We do not exist for the profit of corporations.

God given, inalienable rights of man. That's what the United States is based upon - in my opinion. Little men pervert and act to thwart this, while those little men live little lives - unbeknownst to them. Their prism is upside down, exponentially magnifying the profundity and scope of their lives in their minds.

    • II do not hate Israel or Israeli's. I do hate the fact that the American Israeli Political Action Committee, AIPAC, has such a strong control over my Government's policy. The militant land grabbing occupation supporting war mongering wing of the Israeli government will continue to control our policy until our Untied States politicians in office stand up to them. If an elected Senator or Congressman goes against AIPAC policy, his opponent immediately gets tremendous money and support to make sure the persn is out of Office the next election cycle.

The Failure of the Israeli Left and the Two-State Solution
      Remi Kanazi - June 23, 2007 - op -ed

Time and again one is told of the Israeli "left," the many number of Israelis, ranging from members of the Knesset to shop owners, dedicated to peace. The 40-year occupation is of particular concern to putative peace activists and purported individuals of conscience. "The burden of occupation" and its ugly realities, as many so-called dovish Israeli politicians have pointed out, tear at the moral fiber of the Jewish state. Yet, even when one looks at the horrors of the occupation in the Israeli media and political circles, it is at best through the Israeli prism, which juxtaposes the pain of Israel in equal magnitude to the pain of the Palestinian people. This Israeli pain, without its counterpart's suffering, is transferred to the papers of the U.S. press and is ultimately exponentially magnified, giving the American people a distorted awareness of the Israeli narrative.

Nonetheless, there must be a clear understanding that only one people is living under occupation — many after being dispossessed in 1948 and again in 1967. By even phrasing today's climate as a conflict, it lends support to the assumption that this is a dispute between two equal sides, with equal grievances. The complexities of the Palestine question is further complicated by issues beyond the 40-year occupation, including the Palestinian right of return, the Israeli settler movement in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the third class status of Palestinians living in a Jewish state.

Supposed peace activists find solace in verbally condemning the settlement movement and the harsh conditions that emanate from occupation. Yet most aren't doing anything to actively stop it, and when moral fiber is truly urgent, as was the case during the Lebanon war or the continuing debilitating sanctions and bombardment on the Palestinian people, they remain silent. Condemnation after a war isn't moral reflection, it's cowardice. There is no difference between hawkish and dovish policy in Israel, only a divergence in the approach to implement it. Those on the "far left," who are the brink of being classified as "self-hating Jews," including self-styled humanitarians such as Meretz MK Yossi Beilin, only serve to massage their own egos and consciences by portraying an image that they are fighting for peace. In reality, these people assign themselves to the same racist and exclusivist ideology that came into form long before the creation of the state of Israel.

...The only way to break down a racist and exclusivist structure is to chip away at its base and force an alternative reality. This would require not only ending the occupation, but looking internally at the Israeli state, a Jewish state, a state which doesn't and can't function as democracy for all its people. Many Palestinians leaders and supporters within Israel have come to realize this and have been ostracized for bringing this notion to light, namely Azmi Bishara, while many more will be undermined and attacked in the future. Yet, divestment, boycott, and sanctions coupled with a movement forward for both Israelis and Palestinians to live as equals in a shared society is the only hope for true peace. This new path must run counter to the Oslo mentality of submissiveness and acquiescence: a model much like South Africa, Northern Ireland and Belgium. It is time for an end to the occupation, but more importantly, it is time to look through a new prism, one that sees a better solution for Israel/Palestine."

    • So right Cosmo.

It's unfortunate, but that is how it works - if the issues aren't dealt with in a therapeutic manner - don't know that a horrific experience such as that could be.

Despite that, there are jews that have not become the persecutor. I wish those healthier would take over and lead them to peace - and place all the militant cold hearted ones on medicine or preferably provide them serious counseling.

    • Well put, Cosmo.

Al Jazeera is reporting Israel's defense minister as saying that the military is "not afraid" or launching a "major ground" invasion. Israel is going to step up its response to rocket fire from Gaza, though the invasion is not imminent, but a definite option, according to this report.

In the last two days of air strikes more than 30 militants and civilians have been killed, and more than 60 injured in Palestine. Over the same period, Hamas has hit Israel with more than 80 rockets.

    • I wonder how many more generations of people will have to live under this sort of oppression? The sooner Israel gives up all occupied land the better. It is in Israel's best interest to give up all occupied lands. This is the only solution for a true enduring peace. the return of the Golan Heights to Syria, and the establishment of Palestine as an Independent State. There is no other way. Israel has the best friend it will ever have in the White house for less than a year. It is better for Israel to negotiate peace now from a position of strength than have to be forced into a compromising peace later when its hand is not so strong. The world is getting smaller and American are not buying the myth that Israel only commits these crimes against civilians in self-defense. The truth is, Israel does not distinguish civilian and military targets.

    • Oh, I see, the tactics are really beginning to pay off for the Israeli's.

What is the definition of insanity? Oh, ya, it goes roughly like this, repeating the same (re)action and expecting a different outcome.

      - unless, this is the outcome the brilliant Israeli government wants!? Ever think of that? Maybe this is what they want - to bad for those they've suckered into playing their role under Nazi Germany.

They keep rerunning the same old tapes, the same old broken record, someone please hit the eject button and insert a blank tape so they can get on with life.

Unfortunately, by the time the Israeli's realize they are externalizing their inner demons on the poor Palestinians (and Lebanese, and others) they'll have such a tremendous Karmic debt to pay - all the money, power and weapons in the world isn't going to help them.
