It has been reported that the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, has called a halt to the air strikes and raids that have battered the Gaza Strip over the last few weeks, following rocket fire also being halted in the region.
Although there have been no formal agreements made between Israeli defence officials and Hamas, it has been reported that an informal truce appears to have been instigated.
Israeli ministers have ordered the army to reduce its operations in the area to allow Egypt to continue mediation talks
Olmert and the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Fatah movement, have set a target of December for reaching a final peace deal. Abbas briefly called off negotiations last week in response to the continued Israeli military operation in Gaza.
