Iraq and Afghanistan Soldiers Testify at "Winter Soldier 2008"; Day One

Iraq Veteran’s Against the war (IVAW)

Today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., 6 veterans spoke to a room packed with cameras and reporters from every outlet, politically left to right. The announcement was to kick-off the next 3 days of testimonials from over 200 veterans and GI’s from around the country who will be recounting a particularly personal misery that they witnessed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

What Winter Soldier could mean to the current political situation in this Country is a complete unknown. All the testimonials will be broadcast live, and also streaming on the internet (see schedule at www.IVAW.org/wintersoldier). The members of IVAW are prepared for having their stories attacked, belittled and turned against them, as happened in 1971. However, these next few days could represent a turning point that we have all been waiting for.

It is up to those of us in the anti-war movement, and there are millions of us who are against this occupation of Iraq, and escalating rhetoric of war with Iran, to promote the events of the next few days in a way that we have never done before. Word must get out to the impenetrable wall of the corporate media, to those on the street who don’t even know what IVAW is, and to the young men and women in this country who are on the verge of walking up to that recruiter and signing on the dotted line.

Many thanks to current.com! We no longer have to count on mainstream media to report things important to Americans, current.com gives us a voice, enabling us to spread the word about important facts mainstream media chooses to ignore.

    • I submit that the people who screwed up our market place didn't do it so bad because they didn't know better. I submit that the pentagon needed more "cannon fodder" and the financial guys delivered a whole bunch of unemployed people who were (sort of) glad to find a job.

The American people were disgusted by the Viet Cong war crimes. And when the survivors came home and found scorn for the foot soldiers, it was ugly.

Maybe you came home from work and found only 9 hits to your post, because people just don't know how to respond to a government that behaves like a Junta and uses name calling for anyone who questions their activity, calling people unpatriotic for asking questions of elected leaders in a Democracy. Being told that we are "hurting the troops" by asking questions of elected leaders in a Democracy.

Our government is using this "unpatriotic" and "hurting the troops" stuff in order to divide us. And they have succeeded sufficiently enough to get a moron with $700,000,000 in campaign money in the bank, elected the first time, and to get a baby killer re-elected.

So....what do you want us to say?

    • @conniepae Can't believe more people aren't catching this - it is so important. As you know by now the corporate media did turn their collective backs on this historic event. Free Speech tv is continuing this week by playing more clips from this past weekend so people still could catch some of these compelling stories.

    • I can't believe I posted this before I went to work and 12 hours later only 9 views. I hope Americans are seeing it somewhere else. Americans need to hear what these brave soliers have to say. The statistics of PTSD is astounding. All soldiers deserve a voice. These soldiers are not guys who were thrown out, these are soldiers who served in Iraq and Afganistan.

How can they be ignored? Why should they be ignored? .

Bottom line, this didn't happen by accident! Who is gaining from it? What was the goal? Will they get to keep their riches while ordinary Americans suffer. Will there ever be accountability?

    • @Conniepae, Thanks so much for adding this. I was checking to make sure someone had. I don't know what other stations are airing this but it's for sure on the Free Speech network. More shame on the main stream media if they don't air something so important and historic. I hope it does have the intended effect. All this needless death, destruction and ruination of lives needs to end. The soldiers stepping up and speaking out are truly brave and courageous.
