    • You are right of course but due to brainwashed education techniques most people have been conditioned to view things one way..as towards the slavery issue born out of total ignorance of the meaning of sharing..then this subject will always be a talking point.Let us hope that our younger generation begins to think in the right ways...rather than be educated towards the worst values.

    • mcwally,

You asked: Do you write stories to sell papers or do you sell papers to sell stories?

I had to think about that for a while because as a journalist I don't think about what stories to write in terms of selling papers or selling stories. I don't know too many journalists who think in those terms. Pundits, maybe. Columnists, maybe, but not reporters. Now, I have worked for two organisations where the commercial imperatives are muted: the BBC and the Guardian. But most places have a firewall between commercial and editorial, although that is changing.

I think what you are talking about when you say 'selling stories', you are saying whether or not journalists write stories to somehow drive the agenda in a specific (usually assumed ideological) direction.

The two places that I've worked for most of my career have a strong public service ethos, and it drives my thinking about journalism. I think journalism can play an important role in fostering understanding and engagement. But I think we need to do more to engage with the public. We can't stand above the process. Thanks for the comment.

    • Everyone has opinions no most things but what you really need are Views. With Opin.ions..ther is the trap of going round in circles with no real reasoning..whereas with a view it offers a panoramic scene to be opened to multiple translations? As to you being a journalist and looking for a better way to meet and engage with the general public towards issuing genuine understanding on current issues..A.Do you write stories to sell papers or do you sell papers to sell stories..at the end of the day you can only do the best you can do according to your standards and principles..and if you are genuine in these areas then your message will always get through no matter how you write it..tj

    • Thanks, I was hoping that this might kick off a discussion.

As a journalist, even I get frustrated with the 'bumper sticker mentality'. Although you might not believe this, I don't believe that it's a journalist's job is to provoke a fight as these puffed up pundits do. I think we should inform people and allow them to make up their own minds.

I'm starting to think that the media is part of the problem. What controversy are we going to manufacture today? A good friend and a hero in online journalism bemoaned the fact that in the Obama/Wright coverage, instead of finding the signal in the noise, the media was the noise.

But, I don't like blaming the media or the government or someone else for something I don't like, I'd rather figure out a way to make things better. I'm a journalist. How do you think that journalism can do a better job in allowing us to talk about these complex issues with some intelligence? I'm sure you have an opinion on this one.

    • Political forums these days seem to mean re-addressing old issues for the sake of entertainment value dialogue. These forums never resolve anything but continue to open up more cans..of worms that should have been long since forgotten. It should be noted that within these forums the presenters and guests are being paid for generating their beliefs.Sounds like a good job.And so politics can only deal with cultural situations that have arisen..not the projected forecasting of future trends and changes that will always occur when you have mixed nationalities trying to understand each other from different values and standards.Perhaps the key word here is EDUCATİON..because without the research and understanding of all different areas on life..how can we honestly react to each other from a focused viewpoint. One example of this is the word leadership..it does not work because no one has all the answers to a world view..so how can one person be a leader for the world when there are so many facets to explore. If you become a president you can only practice that position of work because it is all new to you..same for any job.Without the research of what you are putting yourself in the way of..how can a person seriously consider taking up such an important and lonely position...where are the Great leaders?

    • You are correct, Sir.
Just because I lean to the Left doesn't mean that I won't try to see all sides to a story. That's why Current matters to me most. Everybody jumps in, whether I like what they have to offer or not. I'm not here to get folks to agree with everthing I say, either. Hell. I might be dead wrong in an opinion but, the only way I'll know it is because of someone reasonably intelligent who gives me another point (or points) of view to think about.
You drive me nuts, sometimes. I like that in a person.

    • I think, it's become an unavoidable issue in current US politics by force so, yes. It will be debated.
As a result, Media will talk...and talk and talk...about it. The problem is, under the misconception that "Joe Public" can't handle more than a few short spurts of serious opinion, the "Talking Heads" will cut each other off to get just the right sound bite out with no solid resolution. We, the people, are left with little to take away from these, so called, panel discussions, other than what some pundit wants us to believe and who said it first. As a result, those that want deeper, more meaningful, dialogues will end up back at our coffee shops to do so.
Thanks to Corporate Manipulated Media, we live in a "Bumper Sticker Mentality" world.

    • I firmly believe that the sooner the issue and constant identification/ pimping of someone's race is dropped, the sooner race/ racism will become a NON ISSUE. Affirmative action is not only outdated, it's reverse racism at this point. Were whites wrong on the issue of slavery, ABSOLUTELY. Is anyone going to benefit by constantly bringing it up and demanding some form of "reperation" (financial OR preferencial treatment) from people who's only association with it is our ancestory? No, not in the least. Race is only an issue because people refuse to let the issue die.

    • Whenever the mention of race comes into question there is a required answer that says All humans are the same design..maybe some are a little more tanned than others..but generally we are all of the same cloned design model either male or female..that is the form for living on this planet.ıf for instance you could understand a lifeform on mars..it might look like a rock? You would not understand it because we humans always seem to think we are the greatest thing going..guess what? And so the question of race is irrelevant really we are all the same design..differing in personalities..which are the anchorage points for most people. When you have a personality people will always have something to see and cling to if necessary to be able to identify whether they like you or not..and so you will begin to see a picture forming of what and why people do what they do..mostly all things come down to three territories..Money-Status-Sex..if you can crack these codes in you life you will be a better person and understand more about what happens in the world and your own human friends. Also the fact that if these politicians and the like really do want peace e.t.c...then they could do it tomorrow..will they..look at the number one slot Money..hope this has been a little journey for you..keep up your enquiryies for the right reasons..take care tj.
