Who's Rebuilding New Orleans?

While mainstream media outlets stopped covering the story a long time ago, the fact remains that over 2 years after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is struggling to rebuild. And when we went down to the Big Easy to see what kind of progress the city is making, we discovered that in many cases, college-age volunteers are leading the charge. Still, it might surprise you what needs to be done. Produced by Campus Progress.

This is what makes current tv great. It gives a voice to a well-constructed independently produced story. Great work.

There remains much to be done all along the Gulf Coast, and while the National Guard could have accomplished this task long ago, volunteers are still the best thing money can't buy
Check out this video on volunteer efforts in St. Bernard Parish just east of NOLA, which had 8-10 feet of floodwater.

it was an awsome pod
About two weeks ago i went to new orleans to help the people recover
One of the days i tore up tile then placed tile in another house next door
Another day i went to a soup kitchen and helped baged food for those who realy needed it and served a hot meal to the people. i heard greats stories from the people in the harry tompson center.
the last day of service we spackeld walls in a different house then we went back to this ladies house called Mrs Barbera and had a seafood ball i think is what they call it and its when they invite all there family and friends and cook lots of food.
it was an eye opening experence and i can't belive they are rebuilding still some areas looks like they never been hit and some like it was the day right after it but with out all the water

Excellent pod! There needs to be continued attention devoted to New Orleans as it is rebuilt. The movement of this pod was great, I loved that they interviewed people while they were volunteering. The story was fantastic and the characters were very interesting. I liked the ending, especially the fact that it was filmed in front of the Washington Monument. It really drove the point home. Nice work, guys!

Great pod! I honestly didn't realize that so little is being done in New Orleans. The student volunteers featured are awesome and inspiring.

This is a great pod, and a necessary topic to visit (or rather, revisit since attention has been unfortunately drawn away).
I lived and volunteered down in Slidell, LA for a little over a month last year, and I can somewhat relate to what those student and semi-permanent volunteers are saying. Buras was the worst that I saw... the further south you got from New Orleans the more you started to feel like nobody cared at all or even knew those places existed.
But thank you for pointing out these people who have been there, who have stuck it out, and who are still trying and rebuilding despite lack of support from the government -- I wish I had stayed longer, I guess I wasn't strong enough.

Excellent work! It is so important to keep the process of what's really happening in the public eye. Thanks for making this.
The media seems to think it is important to throw new pieces of information at us, in order to keep our attention, or make ratings, or something. It has nothing to do with showing us what is, or how we're actually dealing with what is.
Thanks for showing the strength and character of all these college kids, too.

Nice job. I was really interested in getting down there to help out a few weeks ago, during spring break. I was crushed when all the groups I searched through were already filled. I still plan on figuring out a way to get down there some time. There's still so much that needs to be done and it's unbelievable how ignored the situation is in the media now.

Yes, excellent video that's bringing attention to an issue that many people outside of the Katrina area have forgotten about; a forgetfulness perpetrated by the main stream press. Keep up the great work!

I had no idea so little had been done for the victims of Katrina. 2 years? Its astonishing - There is a dangerous correlation between mainstream media coverage and international awareness. I guess that's stating the obvious, but even with the best intentions as media consumers our attention is easily distracted - 'If it's not happening in my back yard, then it's not happening'. A great cause to highlight - good work guys.

Amazing video. I think all that New Orleans and the whole Katrina rebuilding effort have slipped too far from the public eye.
Thanks for bringing it up again and helping me to remember that there is a continuing injustice for the people who were devastated by the hurricane. - 4 years ago

Excellent pod, and very much in the spirit of current.tv. We need to be reminded and informed about the realities of New Orleans, and more importantly, the tough questions are essential in this reporting. I also liked that the questions were framed in a positive light showcasing the many endevours of people who make a difference. Kudos guys!
