PostaCrime enables the public, business owners, and local authorities to post videos and photos from surveillance cameras on the Internet for the primary purpose of identification of the criminal by the general public.
PostaCrime is also accumulating the largest database of daily public crime data, including missing persons, for viewing by the public. This will facilitate a “digital” neighborhood watch which also includes neighborhood discussion blogs.
Snippet from recent article on mashable.com:
"So what if you could collect the largest database of surveillance camera clips in order to create a digital neighborhood crime watch? You’d get PostaCrime. We’ve heard of YouTube clips helping the cops catch thieves caught on camera. PostaCrime is a site dedicated to allowing anyone to upload surveillance camera clips in order to help the community keep better tabs on what’s occurring in their area. Members of the public can identify criminals caught on tape, receive crime alerts, and earn cash for helping put known criminals in the clinker.
PostaCrime as a Google mapplet, search filters, bookmarking and sharing tools. What’s more, the site doesn’t stick to just crime alerts and video uploads. The site is also looking to become a repository for missing kids photos and information. I imagine additional sharing and broadcasting tools will help PostaCrime spread the word as far as possible regarding the user-generated information it collects. And while some may abuse such a system as the one PostaCrime has created, hopefully the good will outweigh the bad."
