After huge crowds gathered along the planned route, it was changed kilometers away bringing both the protesters and supporters together in anger over such a change. San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom did say that the route was expected to make a few changes even up to the last minute. The closing ceremony was canceled as the torch was sent to the airport for an alternate ceremony there.
This may not have been the disaster that Paris and London had seen, but it was a disaster nonetheless.
