Record Rider Turnout for 2006 Mayor's Ride for Trails in Des Moines IA

Being an avid cyclist, I'm always on the lookout for ways to promote bicycling as a fun & healthy activity. When I shot this story in '06, current_ was accepting only exclusive stories. Since this was a volunteer production I submitted to the City of Des Moines and they immediately started playing it on the City's government channel as a stand-alone news short, I could not share this record breaking bike ride with everyone.

So here it is now. It is still as relevant to a national audience as it was in '06. In Iowa the bike riders are our ordinary citizens, in part because we emphasize construction of separate roads for non-motorized vehicles. Gliding along trails in parks, connecting trails to other parks, all without worrying about being killed by cars. It brings out families and encourages camaraderie among riders.

The story opens with remarks from one of the ride's sponsors, RAGBRAI. The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) is the largest organized bicycle tour on the planet. Some 7,000 cyclists ride the four hundred some miles across Iowa each year and almost none of them are the kind of folks you'd expect to see bicycle camping. Iowa bike riders are the kind of folks you see on the Mayor's Ride for Trails, just about everyone.
