From the HBO Miniseries, John Adams. John Adams (Paul Giamatti,) Ben Franklin (Tom Wilkinson,) and Thomas Jefferson (Steven Dillane,) discuss the Constitution. Jefferson's sentiments are truly those of a freethinker. Which is why I have always loved his writings and agree wholeheartedly with his sentiments. Which is more than likely why the Constitution is open ended in that it gives the American people the opportunity to change their form of government if it should not suit the needs of the people or turn towards tyranny... that is, if they are not too distracted or fearful to notice.

    • Yes Hawkmang, and he stood up to John Adams regarding the Alien and Sedition Acts as well. A true man of the people. Disappointing to know that it really didn't take long for what they fought for to be corrupted by those looking to benefit financially from their Independence instead of upholding the principles they fought for. And I imagine that Jefferson would want nothing to do with Bush... but it probably would be along the lines of what he would have said to King George III.

    • I think there are lots of Jefferson's excerpts around, but to get a kernel of his thoughts, you might enjoy Thom Hartmann (of Air America) who wrote a book called 'What Would Jefferson Do?" after reading all of TJ's personal journals.

      Jan, I share your devotion to Jeffersonian philosophy. Did you know that he believed that no generation should be allowed to pass on it's debts to the next? He raised the idea that a generation might be defined in 19 year terms, at which time all debt must be paid off and the Constitution should be reviewed. Among many other things, I wonder what he would think about us borrowing over $3 billion every business day from foreigners? Can you imagine what a conversation between Mr. Jefferson and George Jr. would be like? One man who read seven languages versus a buffoon who can't even speak his native language.

      Here's a nice quote from a real President George W.: "It will be found an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a man of his natural liberty upon the supposition he may abuse it."

      By the way, the John Adams series is great!

    • Yes, I suspect were Thomas Jefferson alive today he would be on a no fly list. No doubt he was a rebel... I love him for that. And don't worry, I'm into thinking for myself rather then relying on connotations. ;-) I'll check it out.

    • This country needs a good healthy dose of real anarchism. Very close to what Jefferson is talking about there.
      (and before you assume anything about anarchism- I would hope that you read and research what it truly is, not what connotations it has)
