Amidst military build-up in Iraq, not to mention escalating violence in the Middle East and Afghanistan, roughly 50% more cases of post-traumatic stress disorder were reported in 2007.

Since 2003 pproximately 40,000 troops have been diagnosed with Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Almost 14,000 cases were diagnosed in 2007 compared with approximately 9,500 new cases in 2006 and 1,632 in 2003.

    • A buddy of mine just got back from Iraq, he isn't the same person I remember and its apparent that he is suffering from PTSD. Me and my girlfriend both noticed the changes in his behavior but he refused to even entertain the idea that he has PTSD. Which goes to show you that the statistics in this story are completely inaccurate. There is no way of knowing how many veterans are not acknowledging their condition and not receiving treatment.

    • Not surprising, but very sad.

Hope these soldiers get treatment for PSTD. As someone who had been diagnosed and treated, I know it can be a painful road to recovery, but well worth it.

It is crucial that the soldiers get treatment so they don't return and hurt their families and communities because of their unhealed wounds.

    • Hardly a surprise, considering these recent soldiers are recovering from two, three and four tours of duty, instead of just one or two...

    • Very few of these returning soliders are getting proper treatment for PTSD.

This is going to have a pronounced effect on our country.

These men won't be able to work, marriages will fall apart, relationships with their kids will be dramatically diminished -- and a lot of these guys may end up in jail because they get into fights because of their condition.

The long term consequences are going to be horrible.

    • It's hardly surprising. The longer one is in a hostile country being attacked by hostiles from every corner, the more trauma and stress people will experience.
