telecom immunity not "off the table"

two emails i received of great importance to our nation.

Here we go again.

Rep. Steny Hoyer is leading a "compromise" on the FISA reauthorization bill that would ultimately let the Bush administration and their friends at AT&T and Verizon off the hook for illegally spying on innocent Americans.

Last night, this so-called compromise was voted out of committee and as early as this morning the bill may be brought to the House floor for a full vote.

Speaker Pelosi can still stop this bill.

As Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi can pull the bill from the floor and refuse to call a vote.

Call Speaker Pelosi right now and demand she stand up to President Bush and stop telecom immunity.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
(202) 225-0100

Suggested Script:
"I'm calling to tell Speaker Pelosi I am depending on her to pull any bill from the floor that will ultimately grant immunity to telecommunications companies who illegally spied on Americans. Can I count on Speaker Pelosi to stand up to President Bush?"

PLEASE REPORT YOUR CALL BY CLICKING HERE

Speaker Pelosi has stood up to the President's fear mongering on illegal spying before, she can do it again. But she needs to hear from you to know where you stand.

Here is what Senator Russ Fiengold said about this bill last night:

"The proposed FISA deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation. The House and Senate should not be taking up this bill, which effectively guarantees immunity for telecom companies alleged to have participated in the President's illegal program, and which fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans at home."

Senator Leahy also made his position clear:

"I will oppose this new FISA bill when the Senate votes on it next week. We must do everything we can to protect Americans from the Bush-Cheney Administration's erosion of our civil liberties and callous disregard for the rule of law -- and this new FISA bill fails that test."

You and I remember that the Senate has passed retroactive immunity before. But working together, we can make sure that the Senate never has a chance to pass this bill by stopping it in the House today. Call Speaker Pelosi right now.

Thank you for taking action.

    • onechance this is the hard part... most of those "pricks" believe as strongly as you and i in their form of democracy. they honestly (some of them) feel their way is best for America. i feel they are delusional and inhumane but in return they feel you and i are ruled by emotion and lacking in any intellectual discipline.
the real problem here, is that we ALL have a tendency to resort to the all to human emotional response of us vs. them. and really for real communication, for real change, we have to find a way past these all too human instincts.
we have to find a way to communicate the value of human life and demand the restoration of the constitution. ... a million people marching on d.c has done it in the past for other issues..

You're so right, and I am usually good about refraining from calling any nmaes or getting too reactionary... But I'm human, and sometimes I get fed up.

Also, I'm at every rally I can make it to, from S.F. to S.D.

      See you there.

    • Today HR 6304, the Hoyer Bush FISA Deal passed with 105 democrats voting in favor of this piece of garbage.

I watched in horror on CSPAN. Each and everyone of those BUSHCRATS just opened the door for big brother to walk right in and they offered him drinks in the form of blanket retroactive immunity for the telecomms.

I think each and everyone of those treacherous traitors ought to be fired on the spot if possible, made to wear double sided over the shoulder placcards that read

" I VOTED TO ALLOW YOUR GOVERNMENT TO SPY ON YOU"

      I am supremely pissed.

    • Now I must ask you to pick up your phone again and call your Representative right now to demand a NO vote on warrantless wiretapping. The vote will be Friday around noon, but please call no matter what time you get this.
Steny Hoyer's warrantless wiretapping bill is obscene because it gives complete immunity to the telcos that have spied on us illegally since 2001, as well as the Bush Administration officials who illegally asked them to break the law. And it lets them continue spying on us by creating Big Brother with a figleaf of meaningless "protections."

On May 14, Democrats defeated a similar immunity bill 213-197. There is absolutely no reason for any Democrat to change his or her vote now except corrupt greed for telco campaign cash.

So call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your House Representative (not Senators) by name, or find your House Representative's name and direct dial by entering your address on the right side:
      http://usalone.com

After you call, share your Representative's response with your neighbors by logging in to Democrats.com. (If you've never created a Democrats.com login, be sure to provide your voting address so we can find your Congressional District.) Then click:
      http://democrats.com/local
Look in the "Congressional District" section for a post on "Warrantless Wiretapping Vote." If you see that post title, click the link and add a comment about your call to your Representative. If you do not see that topic, please create a post with that title by clicking the [Post] link right next to "Congressional District."

While you're visiting http://democrats.com/local, we hope you'll get to know your progressive neighbors by clicking the [Neighbors] link. And if you'd like to keep up with posts by your neighbors, click the [RSS] link to subscribe through your favorite blog reader.

      Thanks for all you do!
