Show your patriotism by declaring your independence from Oil on the 4th of July

The bike-minded folks in San Francisco are spearheading an effort to get Congress to approve more transportation funds for bicycling! They have a new campaign: Gas Free Fridays. Starting this Friday, July 4, "declare your independence" from oil!

This campaign is also an important opportunity to call on your representatives in Washington D.C. to encourage them to support bicycling as transportation by approving direct and better federal assistance to our nation's 20 most populous cities, so that cities can continue to establish safe bicycle networks, bike to transit facilities and public bicycle-share programs.

At the website you can find a sample letter to send to your elected representatives.
You can become one of the growing number of Americans doing your part to lessen our nation's overdependence on oil.

Half of all driving trips in our country are under two miles in length and could easily be done on a bicycle. Americans deserve affordable transportation options and there has never been a better time to support bicycling and a greener future.

    • Wow. Um. The abs have it. Yummay.

I miss living in CA. I do not miss the earthquakes. I do miss the mass transit. But I digress.

I was lamenting tonight the current Light Rail in the Twin Cities area. Meh. There once was a comprehensive rial system in the TC area. No more. Now that they've torn it out, they're taxing the shit outta me to replace it. Such especially needs to go in along the 35W corridor IMHO.

It takes me an hour to drive to work. It'd take me flippin' days (?) to bike there.

I'm all about this. Thumbs and votes up for this.

    • Umm...I scooter and have about 80 mpg. I have never driven a car and don't plan to until I'm physically unable to ride my bike and scooter. Does this count as a protest against Big Oil?

    • Funny enough, because everything is quite packed here in the Netherlands, using a bike has been normal means of transport for ages.

Still i like the idea of seeing other countries follow aswell!

    • I had a very traumatic experience with a bike when I was a kid, I can't get on a bike without freaking out. I'm forever doomed to driving, walking, or public transit.

    • Don't have anything to say when confronted with the truth huh, sounds like a page out of barack's book.

When you get on these bikes think of me that provided the rubber on the tires and the oil on the chain

      GOD BLESS BIG OIL

    • This would not only benefit our environment but our bodies as well. We are the nation with the most overweight population. This would be great if more people got into it. Sadly, stereotypes stem from truth. Most Americans are lazy.

I bought a wicked bike from craigslist for 25 bucks and I could not be happier with my investment. Im going on 4 months with it!

    • This is how asinine this idea is. . . and is solely based on feelings.

      1) you can't even ride a bike on the beach, have you really tried it. It's not possible.

2)I wish all of you hippocrits would stop dicking around and just quit whining and unplug your life.

Stop whining on this website and do it!

We'll start with Julie sollier and the rest can follow. For everyone that considers themselves a planet lover and an oil hater. . . post your electric bills on this site so we can all see the hypocracy.

      GOD BLESS BIG OIL
      GOD BLESS AMERICA

    • Bike paths should be designed into the civil engineering of all the streets. That way, people could use pedal power and feel safe...more riding means nicer legs and more clean air too, so nicer lungs...there's some incentive for you...

    • I bike when I can and use the car only when I need. I wish they will give us an easy way to change the fuel for a mix of solar and water that is not complicated and could be installed at special dealers all over US. A box, that you would just plug in and drive!

    • This does nothing. Thanks for the try though. Bicycle works in some parts of the world such as London or in San Fransisco where you can WALK everywhere. I currently live in SoCal and anytime you want to go somewhere, you HAVE TO DRIVE. If I tried to walk to school from my home, it would take about 1 - 2hr walk. To the supermarket is AT LEAST a 2 hour walk. I don't have any buses that goes uphill. :/ Areas like Los Angeles are designed to force residents to buy cars to travel even for basic necessities. Like I said, good job thinking of an idea but it's not gonna work.

    • anglcazn:

look. My point was that each area is designed differently. SoCal was designed so that getting places would be hard and it would force people to buy cars to drive. My nearest supermarket is a 5-10 minute drive. How long would that take? Should, it would be no problem if I biked downhill. But how am I gonna bike uphill with groceries? I visited Paris before. Everything was within WALKING DISTANCE. It may work in San Francisco where things are within biking distance. It won't work in LA.

And to make things clear. I'm a biker. I love biking, especially if my boyfriend is with me. Part of the reason I'm moving to NoCal for college is because the college I'm going to is environmentally friendly and the area is within biking distance. My bank, supermarket, bookstore, etc. The only time I would need a car is to drive back and forth on holidays to visit my family back down here.

    • well I declare it everyday.
but it is indeed a good start for many people.
**get the masses off their asses**
I think gas is a good incentive for many people to get mind set ready for the pedal over the clutch.
      - wat is up with the abercrombiesque silly picture???
      i not likez. ha haaa.

    • this is an amazing idea! imagine the good it would do not only for the environment but for the health of all americans. the obesity rate would decrease and people would have less chance of getting all these awful diseases.

i think they should figure out a way to bring biking to LA (even though it's just miles and miles of freeways)

i bought a bike for 25 bucks on craigslist. check it out! keep your, car, i think those are a necessity but you can save yourself lots of money and improve your chances to a longer life if you invest in a bike for short distance trips/errands.

    • I had already planned to ride my bike on the 4th due to the horrific traffic every year from tourism where I live. This is a great idea though!

I just found out our town cut down the hours on our public transportation due to gas costs, they used to run till about 11:30ish now the buses only run until about 6:00ish which is completely ridiculous. This is after mention of 24hr public transportation just recently as well... I can imagine there will be a lot more bikes on the road in the next few days...
