Cop chokes marijuana suspect

pigmonkey
WKRN News 2 reports that “the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating after video shot from inside a Mount Joliet patrol car shows an officer choking a suspect.”

In the video, the officer has both hands around the neck of the suspect and is telling him to “stick your tongue out.” The suspect, James Anders, then passes out.

According to WKRN, “The incident began with a traffic stop. Officer Cosby said he smelled burning marijuana, ordered Anders out of the car and told him to spit out something he had in his mouth. … Cosby didn’t find any marijuana in Anders’ mouth but did find a small bag of the drug inside his car.”

Anders was arrested on charges of possessing marijuana, resisting arrest, and tampering with evidence. The charges were later dismissed because of the police officer’s behavior. Cosby was reprimanded and the tape was handed over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

This video is from WKRN News 2, broadcast July 1, 2008.

I ensures that kids can get pot easier than they can get beer ! It prescribes medical marijuana in the hospital. Then arrests patients in the courtrooms when they dont buy from them. The war on drugs is working!!! Against the will of the American people>

    • Attempted murder hands down. People die from that all the time. From brain aneurysms and collapse tracheas, to plain out death from oxygen deprivation to the brain.

The officer should be tried in court.

    • Right, let me get this right...in the US it's ok to be cuffed behind your back and in the pitch dark in the middle of nowhere, have a maglight shone in your eyes 'til you're nearly blinded...then have a cop put both his hands round your neck and throttle you to the point where you pass out??

Well, hell... it was the South so I suppose the guy was lucky that the red neck Cosby didn't just shot him in the head and dump him in a lonely ditch somewhere. Vascular restraint indeed!!
One thing springs to mind though...
...This was filmed on a police video - so THEY'VE released this video...one can only presume because they are ahem... *proud* with their war on drugs.

Yay Cosby - way to go!!

    • Man that poor guy (the "suspect"). He must've already had cotton mouth from smoking and being nervous, and then to be choked. Fuck, his throat was probably torn to shit from all the coughing.

I think the cop should be pepper sprayed and then choked, just to make him appreciate the level of force he uses on "suspects".

That is correct. They conveniently found a "bag" in his car later! Cops carry "shit" to cover their sorry , ass! This is common with drugs, guns, and other planted evidence. Because, otherwise, they could not solve a crime without the perp falling in to their lap!

    • When I transferred to a school in rural southwestern, PA, I lost a lot of respect not only for police officers, but teachers.

My school had a lot of students majoring in criminal justice and elementary/secondary education.

Interacting with them made me realize that the people patroling the streets and educating today's youth can be just as lazy, rude, self-involved, and inconsistent as anyone else.

It shocked me to realize that people who aspire to be police officers or school teachers are not neccessarily more noble than anyone else, nor are they all humanitarians.

They are people who want to influence lives, and make a difference in their world. But everyone wants that. And I think that their world is so limited culturally and socioeconomically, that the only way they can see making a difference is by becoming a teacher or cop.

I had a bad experience with a couple of "steroidized" cops in Hoston in 2002. I was 51 yrs. old, right off of knee surgery when they dragged me out of a bar, due to a fight that I was not a party off, slammed me face down to the ground, handcuffed me, and then started asking questions about the fight. They freaked out when the bartender and other patrons told them I was not the problem. Of course due to the cut on my forehead and rough treatment witnessed by dozens of customers they were forced to do something. They charged me with Public Intoxication, called in four units, refused me a breath test or blood test and locked me up for 4 hours. I of course got a lawyer, demanded drug tests on the officers, and forced them to drop charges. However, I still despise the morons in uniform, that have no respect for the public. I hope some of you dickless wonders of law enforcement, on the internet, have the nerve to defend your behaviour. You think that you are "special'! You are of course "especially ignorant". It is no wonder that violence on law enforcement personnel is increasing. Officer Beckworth of Richmond, Tx should be awarded a medal for excessive ignorance above and beyond the call of duty!

Cops indeed have a tough job. Some cops are just bored and they WILL find some reason to stop you. I have had great luck with cops in the past. To say "whether it's fair or not" is blind support for unjust and illegal actions by police. The Blue Code! Your dad must be a cop.

What this officer did was completely wrong, police brutality is bad. But if you look at any profession, there will, guaranteed, be some who are "corrupt."

I hope this guy sues the crap out of the cop.

    • A cop with short man syndrome and a thugneck in a town like Mt. Juliet should make for a fun video. Cops there have nothing to do and jackasses like that kid are the reason Nice little towns have something to talk about.

Last time I was pulled over in MJ the cop stopped me for a headlight being out and asked me for any info about "Marijuna" for atleast 15 min.. I told the guy that I bought from kids in highschool and happened to have nothing on me (whilst a sack sat in a milkshake in my cupholder)

They aren't very smart and get a Hard On with news of a potential bust.

Let them be they're bored with Providence and that kid'll get caught soon if he hasn't been stopped already.

I'm sure there are better videos from Lebanon, Tn but those are probably buried somewhere.

If you can't follow you're not from the area and shouldnt worry.

    • Here's a quote from drug-overdose.com:

The Drug Awareness Warning Network Annual Report, published by the US federal government contains a statistical compilation of all drug deaths which occur in the United States. According to this report, there has never been a death recorded from the use of marijuana by natural causes. Unlike opiates, barbiturates or amphetamines, there seems to be little risk from the use of large amounts of marijuana.

So the cops full of crap, as usual, and I am not surprised at all. Power crazy and probably high on steroids himself!

    • Whatever , being a cop is hard. Granted this scene shows the lesser side of police and it is only mary jane however it is illegal. Cops have a tough job. They are entrusted by the people to uphold the law. Most people resent them for holding people to that law. Everyone has a good reason as to why they should be the exception. However if you take the chance of breaking the law in public you should be ready to face the boys in blue. If not leave your weed at home and not in the car. I am not defending the cop's behavior but If he wasn't ridin dirty this never would have happened

    • eggsdenison:

But what if he hadn't been "ridin dirty"? Would the cop have been totally justified in his actions? I have been pulled over and had my car searched, and here's the kicker; for no reason. All my lights functioned, and I was going the speed limit. It's because of my hair, and it's ridiculous. I work day in and day out like everyone else. I don't know about any of you, but I happen to live in a hillbilly hell. Not to say that I'm not one myself, but I don't harass people to feel better: while the majority in my area do. I see that a lot of cops have a hard job, and they may not know when they'll be shot, kicked, or even bitten; BUT, there are a lot of times when they ram someone with undo force, or stun someone who is getting down on the ground like they're told, but just not doing it fast enough. There are good cops, but it seems that they are becoming the minority in law enforcement. There was recently a cop in the next town over caught selling controlled substances from his car, ON CAMERA; and he got nothing. No suspension, probation, or any other punishment of the sort. So, while I do see your point, not all people can claim they want to be the exception. Sometimes they just want to be left alone when they're just goin for a drive.

    • I believe (I am very fuzzy on the specifics) that, while one may be arrested for possession of Marijuana, if one were to ingest it, they are no longer breaking the law; it is legal to smell like Marijuana but not to possess it. That would explain why the suspect refused to give up the pot and why the officer worked so vehemently to get him to spit it out--he didn't want to lose his suspect.
It's not fair to claim "fuck the police" because there are straight cops out there--however, as the saying goes, "good cops make good people, bad cops make the nightly news "

I agree. The shocking part of this video is the fact that the cop is saying it is for his own good. That he might OD on pot if swallowed. You can't over dose on pot and that is proven. This traffic stop did not protect (or serve) anyone.

My uncle ( retired police officer ) has always told me how corrupt some police are and that they always overstep their boundaries. He always agreed that weed should not be criminal when alcohol is legal and kills thousands of people a year. As a joke he always said the motto should be "suspect and serve" instead of "protect and serve"! It seems more accurate!

    • Well did he have drugs in his mouth? If he did, it seems to me like the cop just did the "vascular restraint" procedure, which is apparently standard, improperly. He even said "I'm gunna choke you." It wasn't an *attack*. He was just poorly trained at the maneuver, not a fascist. If the cop says spit what you have in your mouth out - you do it.

Now if there was nothing in his mouth, that's a different story.

    • i've lived in Tn. - actually , i was stopped one night in Nashville for doing 70 in a 30 zone , and my tag was expired , i hadn't switched my license over , i had one headlight out , was inebriated , and had my Glock in a sock , loaded , in my glovebox - the 2 cops who stopped me stripped my Glock and informed me that i couldn't keep ammo in it , and had to keep the ammo separate from the gun ( 2 steps from firing , as i recall ) - after 10 minutes they handed me my Glock , in one hand , and my ammunition in the other , and one guy said " keep these separated , and do you normally use hollow points for target practice ? " ( i had told them that i carried my Glock around just in case the odd impromptu practice session should arise ) - we laughed , and i went home without any kind of ticket . it seems they had better things to do - like respond to a call about some hippy resisting arrest . i love Tn. cops .
