Do you think the signers of the declaration would be celebrated if they were alive today, or would they be considered terrorists?
Should the people oust their government from time to time, when that government no longer represents the peoples' interest?
Does our country still represent the ideals present in this document?
Would the revolutionaries of 1776 be revolutionaries today, or would they be pleased with the outcome?

I believe that deep in their hearts the people still "hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, ..."
The part of this that is most absent is "the consent of the people". As a society we've abdicated our responsibility to control the powers we've given to the government. People need to call thier elected officials and let them know what they like and don't like, and they need to vote in every election.

memmy, they also do not realize why they are celebrating today. We are celebrating this document, a document that would be considered very volatile if written today.

I am thankful for many things in the "United" States of America, but at the same I am disgusted, embarrassed, and increasingly concerned about the future it holds for me. No, I think the forefathers of our declaration and constitution and bill of rights would be revolted and very angry about a great many issues. What is ironic is that a lot of people who are celebrating today do not even realize what freedoms they have lost in the past eight years.

We need a declaration of independence from our corporate/special interests loving government that ignores our human right to clean air, clean food, and clean water by allowing big business to get away with polluting our everythings!

Here's another interesting excerpt from the D of I -- does it remind us of anyone in today's times, hmmm???

Would they be considered terrorists?? Well, let's take a look at the first sentence of the Declaration:
"When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."
I'd say yes, they would.
