I dont get it though. If so many of them are close descendants of African Americans how is it that they look so white? Anyone that I know who has white and black parents looks mostly black.

lukeskywalker: lack of profanity and an actual point could make your comments worth a second look
sadly a lot of people are voting for (or not voting for) obama based on his race.
the term black seems too general for him. he's kenyan and white (i don't know what european descent he is). if i'm on the west coast i'm just black but on the east coast i'm black and bajan (barbadian, from barbados). to some black/afro/caribbean, including me, he's not really black; he's kenyan. just saying you are black leads people to believe that you are american slave descendant which is not the case for obama.

yeah i understand, i did ask a question after all so i expected an answer.
well to explain myself, my major problem with jackson is how he fought his entire life to kill native american peoples and push them out of their own land. plus, he may have been one of our earliest politicians whom you could call a "warmonger"-he fought in at least thirteen duels in his life, killing at least one man, and he vowed to send the army into s. carolina when it wanted to secede which it seems like there could've been a better way to resolve that. also he single-handedly caused a depression that lasted a decade after he destroyed the national bank and required people buying land to pay in gold and silver coins.
whew. i understand that he accomplished some good things as well and he, like most people, probably had good intentions, but for these things i have a pretty negative view of him

Andrew Jackson was a pretty crazy guy, once fought in a pistol duel and let the other guy shoot first to make it fair, guy shot him in the chest then Jackson blew his head off, wow!

Age, experience and laid back attitude to life is what we all acheive as the years roll quickly by. Sadly this does not seem to rub off on the younger generation of today.
Influenced by the media they only see and hear what they want, I,as you look at things with a more balanced view and with a smile on my face come what may.
I enlisted in the air force (UK) in 52 met and befriended several black comrades two of whom I still communicate with to this day. Sadly two others have passed away but one thing that I found exceptionally heartlifting was that a large proportion of old comrades met up once more at their funerals I was also amazed how many had been in touch with one another and how information on others had filtered through on the internet.I have seven more old friends with whom I keep in regular contact with since the last funeral, so it shows that death can bring people close together.
Keep smiling friend. themanwithadog

Thanks for your honest views, Walk. I can truly appreciate your point of view based on your experiences. However, I wish it was simply a matter of people being 'jack asses' to each other. And don't sell yourself short, friend. You expressing your views honestly is a great step in dealing with Racism.
Where a lot of your views, and people like you, fail to connect with is the active nature of Racism. True, words are one thing, but the idea that one Race, which is a social categorization and not supported by science, is better than the other permeates our society, to the point where one group does not even feel the need to be civil or decent to another. Ok, now why do I say this. Let us take a look at healthcare. Their are alarming differences in quality based up what you look like. In a country that is supposed to be based on equality, this is, as an American, unacceptable. This insidious concept of Racism does not allow for true equality, in this instance quality healthcare for every American, to take root because some practitioners feel one group simply does not deserve it. As a country, we are supposed to be against this. We are all supposed to be entitled to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. As long as this concept exists and is ignored, swept under the rug, etc, our home will never reach it's full potential.
I would invite you to read some of the essays by Tim Wise, who has had a similar reaction to Racism as you, but did the research to see if it was actually true or not. I think you will find it very good and educational reading.
Once again Walk, thanks you for sharing. I hope we can continue this.

I'm not touching most of this, but I have to say that as a 23-year-old female, I don't consider someone referring to me as a "girl" instead of a "woman" slanderous in the least. It's perfectly common to refer to a woman as a girl, just as it's common to refer to a man as a "guy", or even a boy in some instances. I doubt he referred to the person in question as a girl in order to insult her, and I honestly don't see the problem.

George W Bush is black hearted man so could this qualify him to be a black president?
The future outlook appears to not only be be bleak but also black. Whoever has the misfortune to be the next Commander in Chief has a mountain to climb with an immense load upon his soulders.Primarily to re-establish the name of America as it at an all time low throughout the world, thanks to Bush`s idiocy and mismanagement of everything. Also he has a mammoth task riding the US of three trillion plus dollars of debt and still rising.
However Obama may be just the answer as what I have seen and read about him over the past year or so he seems to have a good aproach to all matters to which he is questioned on
As I have said before, black or white, it is the MAN that counts. Obama fits the bill
