Vanity Fair satirizes McCain

The magazine posted a cartoon on its website featuring John McCain holding a walker with one hand and giving the fist bump to a pill-popping (well pill-holding) Cindy McCain. The Constitution burns in the fireplace of the Oval Office while a painting of George W. Bush hangs on the wall.
In a short accompanying article, Vanity Fair speaks of it's "affectionate rivalry" with the New Yorker. (They share a building and play softball against eachother).
"We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker's became the "It Girl" of the blogosphere," Vanity Fair writes. "Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we'd like to share it with you. Confidentially, of course."

The New Yorker's cover had little truth to it, which makes it lacking in satire and more of an insult. The Vanity Fair cover shows a lot of truth sans the burning of the constitution and thus it is more satirical than the New Yorker's.
I think there is an insult toward the Obama camp, however, I think you might be pushing it a bit far when you assume this image was already on the minds of alot of white americans. Maybe I'm misinterpreting your statement but to me, that comes across as a racist remark.

I'm not pushing anything. Ask the voters in rural America who voted 80 to 20% Clinton simply because they were in fear of voting for a Black candidate. I've been Black all of my life, and a great deal of that time was spent integrating White America. It baffles me to see that still today, White people want to try and convince us that RACISM does not exist. There's no truth in the New Yorker front cover. This was a cheap ploy to strike fear into the hearts of mainstream America (Black and White).

Oh mannnnn
I thought this was going to be over. IT NEVER ENDS.
On a side note, this one isn't as funny as the the New Yorker's. But that's just because there hasn't been nearly as much ridiculous crap said about McCain compared to Obama.

Why could do something different if i was a different direction than would feel more like was a balanced veiwpoint.
By doing the same picture, just shows that the first picture is how they really feel.

The prescription bottles in Cindy's hans are the only thing thats not funny about the cover. Addiction is not funny. If you know anyone or have been addicted to something yourself. Or even have had people die from addiction/ half of my friends and a cousins you would think so to.

well at least this one's mainly true, as raw as it is. i still don't condone the Obama one, that was plain wrong.
and, at least they're finding humor in this competition, which the world is full of. Lets hope they don't go too far with it, but knowing us as Americans, they will.

Holy, the "context" for the NY cover could be called "the present political climate as reflected in the mainstream press," which only stupid people failed to understand (sorry).
The "truth" is that the cover was a 100% accurate depiction of the hysterical nonsense the media - not just Fox News, but CNN, the networks, etc. - have been "reporting" about Obama.
It's really, really, really easy to understand.

I wonder if having Condé Nast being the owner of both publications has anything to do with the belated and not nearly so nasty spoof on MyCane. The Vanity Fair cover is a varitable soft shoe compared to the really racist xenophobic and provocative tap dance New Yorker cover.

What's funny or actually NOT funny about this one and the reason less people are complaining about it is it's all true this time. Where the New Yorker's was all satirical (Obama is NOT a fist bumping Islamo-terrist married to Angela Davis) Vanity Fair's is spot on accurate (McCain is an old clone of W with a pill popping wife that doesn't care about the Constitution).

I actually wrote a sketch about this for a show in Chicago last week.
McCain was hogtied and being tea-bagged by Bush while a group of congressmen with strap-ons were sneaking up behind him. Also, the founding fathers were flaying Jesus and boiling his eyes.
I think the artist of this cover pulled too many punches.

They did enough---as equally as the cover of Obama.

I was suggesting that there's a fine line between good satire and offensive material. I find this cover to be tame and uninteresting in comparison to the Obama picture. It does not follow, however, that I would actually like that line to be crossed.

I would. Crossing the line is what satire is all about. It's also what freedom of expression is all about. Nobody says people have to like it. I think your example above crosses that line...now we just need a magazine to comp it up and put in on their cover.
