News from Narconon - TransWorldNews press release. It's not an ad or an anti-drug article ... Read it ...

Marijuana is addictive!

Narconon is an international drug rehabilitation organisation which claims a presence in 26 countries around the world. It is involved in a range of anti-drug activities, including lectures to schools, educational programmes and providing residential drug rehabilitation therapy for addicts. It claims extraordinarily high success rates - anything up to 85% - for those undergoing its treatment programme. Narconon is very energetic in publicising its claims and, over the years, it has managed to persuade a number of state and national governments to fund its activities. Founded in 1966, the modern Narconon programme is the work of the late L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction author and founder of the Church of Scientology. It combines what might be termed his moral philosophy with his theories on the nature of drug addiction and his solutions to the problem, providing a mixture of educational and therapeutic activities.

What is the Narconon programme?

* Narconon's clients go through four stages designed to detoxify their bodies and reform their lives and practices:
Drug-Free Withdrawal - equivalent to "cold turkey", stopping all drug taking and tackling the resulting physical and mental pain with vitamin doses and "assists", a form of spiritual healing.
Therapeutic TRs Course - a series of drills performed with another person which aim to "bring about interaction between the individual and the existing physical universe".
New Life Detoxification Program - an intensive programme of running, massive overdoses of vitamins and very long sauna sessions, designed to "run out" drugs and radiation from the body.
Life Improvement Courses - a series of short courses which aim to improve a person's ability to study, communicate and exercise moral judgements.

* The overall cost of the Narconon programme is a flat fee of about $15,000. It takes between 3 months and up to a year to complete.

"Many baby-boomers recall their younger years fondly," comments Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia. "Part of the culture was the summer of love, and marijuana was passed around freely. As they grew up, and moved on, most left pot behind and became responsible adults.

"They would be in for a shock today. With THC content of modern commercial marijuana in some cases 15 to 20 times more powerful than the marijuana produced in the 60's and 70's, marijuana addiction is a real threat.

"Don't let kids or others fool you: It's not 'just pot' any more. These levels of THC now make marijuana extremely dangerous, extremely powerful, extremely addictive."

Don't get too scared by the rhetoric ... They've convinced our government that it's OK to rehab addicts into their church too.

Post Script:
I think some people were confuse after reading this article. I posted it to dramatize the narco-industrial complex in this country. If only all business could market their products based on lies.

    • Alcohol and tobacco are addictive and deadly. As long as they are legal I do not care if marijuana is "addictive" it is still the safest way to catch a buzz.

    • Remember the old saying:

"God made weed, Man made booze...who do you trust?

The chemical CBD which is extracted and applied TOPICALLY helps poeple with mri proven degenerative disc disease disease with chronic back pain. It is rubbed on areas of arthritis and imflammatin, It's use helps to keep this group of people off of drugs like MsContin which is basically Heroin in pill form and HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!! The used of cannabis also keeps money out of the pockets of the...OMG>.....EVIL DRUG COMPANIES THAT WANT YOU TO TAKE THEIR PROVEN ADDICTIVE PAIN MEDS WHILE THIER POCKETS ARE LINED WITH GOLD!!!!.

The area I live in you CAN LEGALLY use cannabis if you have an MD's recommendation for it!

When is the government going to stop wasting tax payers money on a war on medical cannabis and go after the REAL ViLLIANS ---
      METHAMPHETAMIN AND HEROIN???

So if you pay to go to a movie is there an addiction there? It costs about 20 dollars for a movie ticket, popcorn and soda = 2 hours of entertainment. Or, 20 dollars for a sack of chronic = 4 days of entertainment. You should pay rent before you buy weed but the same can be said about anything you spend your money on. People who don't live by that code are victims of stupidity rather than addiction.

What journals of study have you read besides the D.A.R.E. pamphlet which says that marijuana is addictive?

I will grant you that some people have a mental dependency on it but most of those people that I know only have that because they used it to cope with their emotional trauma during puberty, and I would choose that they cope with weed rather than heroin or crack or something way more dangerous.

The LD50 of THC is 10,000 times the amount required to get anyone high, so there is no danger at all from dying from THC.

The only thing people are in denial of is the government being in denial that the hemp/cannabis industry could save the American economy.

    • cold turkey doesnt always work, some people die if they quit all their addictions at once. Ease them off slow and steady with the aid of legal drugs if needed.

    • L. Ron Hubbard AND The Church of Scientology are a VERY BAD JOKE!!!!
I've seen MANY people, as well as myself, smoke pot for YEARS!!! They, nor myself, have EVER gotten dependant on this stuff. I and many others have given it up countless times with no convulctions, getting sick and throwing up, commited suicide because of not having it,held up a gas station, bank, liquor store,or broken into a church to steal things so that they could get thier money to buy thier pot.
Thus, I concluded a LOOONNNNNGGGGGG time ago that everything I heard about the "BAD EFFECTS" (supposedly) of pot were simply extemely highgrade B.S. that was fit for nothing else than making plants grow, MAYBE!!!!!
During World War II the government actually implored farmers to grow hemp for the war effort, because it made high quality fiber for making supremely superior ropes, string, etc. that the Japanese had cut us off from S.E. Asia. AND for a matter of YEARS the Library of Congress claimed that the film that the government MADE did'nt exist. If you don't believe it, then enter a search on your computer under "Hemp For Victory" and go to "www.hempfarm.org" and research it for yourselves to find out who has the most to loose if we can EVER get it legalized. George Washington as well as Thomas Jefferson raised it as well. Where do you think places like Hempstead and Hemp Hill got thier names? Check it out for yourselves, I challenge you to prove me to be someone who would feed you unsubstantiated B.S.. I can back up EVERYTHING I HAVE SAID.
As for cocaine, opium, heroine, huffing, etc., THESE SHOULD be controled because they HAVE ruined MANY lives and I have known a BUNCH of people who are no longer with us, in prison for murder, or just ruined thier lives over these kinds of drugs. I will not associate with them for the fact is that I simply can NOT trust them anymore because they will lie, cheat, steal from thier own parents and grandparents to get what they want. THAT is what you call DEPENDENT, HOOKED, ADDICTIVE!!!!!!!!! These are NOT anything that I can say about marijuana.
I'm 50 years old. I've had to give up smoking it to get good paying jobs because of government hypocracy, I've given it up because of not having the expendable income because of lay offs, downsizing, another company bought us out and did'nt want/need us (I think most of us has experienced this at LEAST once in your lives unless you were REALLY LUCKY!), I've even given it up because I simply just got tired of smoking it. I've given it up for YEARS at a time and it always AMAZED my friend that smoked that it did'nt bother me to be there when they were smoking, that I was'nt tempted to smoke with them, or that I really did'nt WANT it. Now think about this one REALLY HARD for just a second, does this in ANY SHAPE, FORM, OF FASHION even CLOSELY SOUND as if this is a "DANGEROUS, ADDICTIVE" plant?
Even IF todays marijuana WAS 15-20 times more potent than the stuff that was around during the 60's and 70's, that only means that you would have to smoke less of it to get the same effect, and it's STILL NOT ADDICTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gave it up over TWO YEARS AGO and I STILL have no desire to smoke any now.
So stick THAT in your pipe and smoke it, or not (ha,ha).

    • This is a scam. I just quit for a job after 5 years of everyday, no prob. There is no level of THC that could ever be considered "dangerous" and by no means "extremely addictive". This is the type of propaganda that is keeping this herb from the people who really need it.

    • I didn't read any proof of addictive qualities. I saw no reference to controlled study groups. What kind of science claim is that? I saw a statemnt that addicition was a possiblitiy, but so is being run over by a truck while on my bike! I don't need a church rehab to tell me that.

    • Narconon = drug war opportunists ... like the DEA who have arrested or killed every major drug kingpin on the planet, have run out of bad guys to kill or re educate and now they want to concentrate on the Herb Consumers. Cannabis is an ingredient of the Holy Anointing Oil of the Bible and is a seed bearing plant.

    • I am sorry but I refuse to believe a claim that marijuana is addictive from the church of Scientology.

Their high success rate is merely replacing the addiction with brainwashing converts to the church.

    • Its addictive in the same way as any chemical that effects the mind is. but you would never have someone with a dangerous dependency for it like cocaine, you probably wouldn't even see the same effects as tobacco.

    • IKilledBambi:

The point is that, by classic, proper definition, it is NOT addictive. We have really lost touch with what the word "addiction" really means. Sure, people may form a psychological dependence on it, but that is not clinical "addiction". THC does not interfere with synaptic junctions and neurotransmitters so much that suddenly ceasing THC intake causes chemical imbalance to the point of significant illness or death (as in the case for opiate or alcohol addiction).

It's a buzzword, used to stir emotion and custom-craft a desired response from the public.

    • JackHerer that's a fantastic argument, one I'm sure I'll have good use for in the near future. Addiction implies that the body chemistry is dependent on the chemical, where as Obsession implies ones mental tendency to use their fixation as a crutch. Compulsory or habitual use of one thing does in no way imply addiction, but rather a persons innate desire to derive pleasure from said thing. IE food, gambling or sex....... rephrased and absorbed. If this story gets on the air I'm interested to see how it will be spun.

    • Web Chat on Addictions with Dr. Allen Battle, UTMG Clinical Psychologist.

(The following is an edited transcript of questions and answers from a web chat held on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 on News Channel 3)

Hello, I'm Dr. Allen Battle, a psychologist with UT Medical Group and professor of psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Today we are talking about addictions.

      Q: Is marijuana addictive?

Dr. Battle: No, marijuana is not addictive. It isn't addictive because the active ingredient in it, THC, does not become a part of the body chemistry. So that then, that body, would be dependent on it just as it is dependent on water or food. That is the essence of addition; it is physiological!

Gambling, food, sex, are not addictive. To use the word addiction in connection with these activities is to pervert the meaning of the word addiction. These things can become obsessions, that is to say, thoughts that repeat and repeat in spite of the individual not desiring to have them. They can become compulsions, in which the individual must act upon those thoughts. They can become habitual. They may be used as a way of escaping from problems in the here and now. But none of these things are physiological.

This is the end of the discussion.

Anyone who has done pot KNOWS that it isn't addictive. It's too boring to be addictive.

Now, many people are emotionally addicted to it, but that's a different story altogether.

The idea that pot is naturally addictive is completely stupid.
