Michigan police taser newlyweds during wedding reception

The Michigan wedding of Durango newlyweds Andy and Ania Somora came to an abrupt end last weekend after the bride and groom were tasered by local police and spent their wedding night in jail.

Judi Burnison, who rented the gallery to the Somoras for the reception, told Enders the party had gotten out of hand, and there were broken glasses and spilled drinks.

Burnison declined to comment Wednesday, but she said her lawyer would respond to questions.

However, no call was received as of Wednesday evening.

Enders told the assembled guests to leave, but many became upset, police said. Enders called for backup, and 14 law-enforcement agencies responded to help clear the crowd. Police said that many of the 100 guests left peacefully, but several continued to be disorderly and to swear at the officers.

However, eyewitness Kacpar Skowron, a professional Chicago photographer and friend of Ania Somora, said police overreacted and ruined a perfectly good wedding.

"My perspective is that the main officer (Enders) handling it was cool at first, but then he started threatening that everybody would be arrested. But trying to kick the party out at 11:20 (p.m.) on a wedding night when we had a contract to be there? He was a big jerk," Skowron said.

Skowron said the crowd got particularly unruly after police handcuffed Andy Somora's father and put him in the back of a police cruiser. He said the elder Somora, whom he described as "a distinguished older gentleman," was trying to talk to Enders to defuse the situation.

"I didn't believe it, but I witnessed it. It was brutal, and that's when Andy got really mad," he said.

Breaking news!! Fourth ammendment now ammended.

Cops with tasers are allowed to use them freely on any member of the public they wish.Points will be awarded for the best hits.

      For example:-

      10 points --wheelchair occupants

      9 points----wedding guests

15 points -- severely disabled people

      13points-- anyone aged and infirm

      Give `em hell boys

    • I shudder to think what would have been the reaction by Michigan police at my third wedding.I would have probably been sitting on death row now
My two exes turned up along with two ladies who I had had an affair with in the previous week.
To say all hell broke loose is a minor statement but I, being pretty smart took a backseat and enjoyed the "bash"
The honeymoon was a bit shitty though

    • It sounds like the place was an art gallery that doubled as a place to hold private parties? I mean, if you want a rowdy wedding reception, take the party to the father of the bride's backyard and feed everybody keg beer. I'm all for a party where people cut loose, but if these people were drunk enough to get tased, I'm sure they weren't exactly friendly to the owner/operator who asked them to tone it down.
And as they say, every time someone drunk is tased, an angel gets his wings...

    • There will be no more laughing, no more fun, no more joking, dancing, drinking, smoking, loud communication or roudyiness or you will be TASERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too bad one of the guests didn't have a taser to return the favor.

    • Go Martial Law! God. I wish I had a well placed remark about this, but it just seems like there's no point anymore. What is it going to have to come to before we realize that the only people that can stop this behavior is ALL the people, accumulatively?

    • Tazers are now a common story. None of these stories are surprising me anymore. All of them have two elements: police and a victim or victims.

I want to see a story where a tazer saves a victim, not hurt them. That will surpirse me.

    • How can we know what happened, what was said, what threats might have been made, how the officer might have felt, from a small paragraph with about three quotes? I'd say there isn't enough information here to really do ANY armchair convicting (not stopping some though). Save judgment of the situation for a judge.

    • The problem with these weddings is that people sign contracts with the hosts not to damage things or be unruly. Then the guests get intoxicated and violate the contract. Then the hosts ask them to leave. Then the guests say f... you. Then the hosts only option is to call the cops. Then the cops show up and have to deal with the situation using their best judgment. And with the new taser it's the safest way for them to arrest someone. So they use it, why? Because its legal and again it's the safest way for THEM. Does it make it right? I don't know.

I have a friend that rents his building for events and he does not do weddings anymore. Too many situations like this one. If you can't respect the property you are renting you deserve to be shown the door.

    • What's with all these news stories about police tazering people? Is this an increase in taserings or are these events just being reported on more?

    • Something is not right here somewhere. Broken glass everywhere? So the cops tasered guests and the guests threw glasses at them or something?
I get the feeling that this story is incomplete.
Sounds like a Jerry Sprionger show. OMG!

    • Cops love tasers because they make them feel big and powerful, but the truth is they are beat cops. They are one step above working a school cross walk.

    • Ahh what is going on with all this tasering!? What ever happened to nightsticks? Oh and spilled drinks and broken glasses sounds like a crazy time. Of course the bride and groom are going to be pissed when a bunch of cops show up to their wedding reception! You can't just re-do your wedding reception!

    • I gotta say 14 police agencies? These people need to get a job for sure. Maybe there should be an investigation and maybe a lawsuit or two.

    • The police in America are supposed to be there to protect and serve and I stress supposed. There are many instances in which the police are not trained and a simple incident quickly gets out of control. There are also police that need to be reigned in, but like everything else there are good cops and bad cops, just hope you get a good one.many of them have no respect for human beings and human rights or the law. It's a tough call and I would not want the job of ruining peoples days and sometimes lives for some things that we all do sometimes. I don't mean rape or murder or serious crime I mean simple things like getting a little drunk or a little high from time to time most people do that. Simple things can spiral out of control if not handled in professional manner by trained and experienced people.

Oh please, David Icke, the same guy who ties to sell us that the world is actually run by the Global Elite/Illuminati who are a race of reptilian humanoids. And that this race includes George Bush, the Queen of England and Boxcar Willie. He also wrote that all Masonic Lodges are connected to a great underground reptilian base.

God, I hope you are joking.

    • The way it looks, cops can taser you if you stick your tongue out at them. If they perceive it as a threat, you're fried chicken
. I'm laying down in the prone position the next time a cop shows up to any kind of function I am at (not that it happens a lot, LOL) . And I guess I should always have my camera on me, too.

      This is gettin' scary.

    • A little diplomacy probably would have gone a long way on both sides, though it sounds like the wedding party was trying... too many itchy taser fingers out there. Maybe it's time to review and improve on some taser legislation...imagine the stories they tell in the locker room...

What happened to the days of " COPS : Bad Boys Bad Boys, uh-watcha gonna do, uh-watcha gonna do when they come for you?.."

Did cops nowadays forget how to body slam a person? or a choke hold?
Seems like they skip those classes and go straight to the tasering and shooting class.

    • But those people swore at the police.
At least they did'nt kill them like that other guy.
And the hall was paid for I see law suits coming
for the police and the club owners you have to expect some broken glasses and other minor problems.
I hope they win millions for ruining the once in a lifetime event.

    • I think there are too many of these cases..

Between June 2001 and June 2007, there were at least 245 cases of deaths of subjects soon after having been shocked using Tasers.[47] Of these cases:

In 7 cases, medical examiners said Tasers were a cause or a contributing factor or could not be ruled out as a cause of death.
In 16 cases coroners and other officials stated that a Taser was a secondary or contributory factor of death.
In dozens of cases, coroners cited excited delirium as cause of death. Excited delirium has been questioned as a medical diagnosis.[48]
Several deaths occurred as a result of injuries sustained in struggles. In a few of these cases head injury due to falling after being shocked contributed to later death. Some police departments, like that of Clearwater, Florida, have tried to eradicate such incidents by prohibiting taser use when the suspect is in danger of falling.[49]
In 2005, a medical examiner ruled for the first time that a Taser was the primary factor in a death.[50]

      Several incidents have received publicity:

July 2005, UK. Police Tasered a man in hypoglycemic shock, believing that he was a potential security threat.[51]
April 2006, USA. A 56 year old, wheelchair bound woman dies after ten Taser shocks, death ruled homicide.[52]
October 2006, USA. A 17 year old boy died after being repeatedly Tasered by police.[53]
November 2006, USA. UCLA Taser incident
September 2007, USA. University of Florida Taser incident
October 2007, Canada. Robert Dziekański Taser incident
November 2007, Canada. Howard Hyde incident.[54]
November 2007, USA. Christian Allen incident.[55]
December 2007, Canada. Quilem Registre Taser incident
April 24, 2008, USA. Kevin Piskura died after being stunned by a X-26 Taser for 10 seconds while interfering with a friend's arrest by Police in Oxford, Ohio. He was hospitalized after the confrontation and died five days later. Video and audio of the event was recorded by the X-26's mounted camera. [56]

Cops need to chill out with their tasers! Too many incidents have been happening lately with abusing the taser and using it irresponsibly.
