There is no word in biblical Greek or Hebrew that is equivalent to the English word homosexual. The 1946 Revised Standard Version (RSV) New Testament was the first translation to use the word homosexual.

There is no word in biblical Greek or Hebrew for “sodomy” or “sodomite.” A Sodomite would have been simply an inhabitant of Sodom, just as a Moabite would have been an inhabitant of Moab, though the word sodomite does not show up in biblical Greek or Hebrew. Any translation of the Bible making use of the words sodomy or sodomite are clear interpretations and not faithful translations.

    • The bible clearly hates gays. It also hates shellfish, Moabites and idols. I happen to like all these things ... even though I don't think I've ever met a Moabite I reckon they'd be more fun than Christians.

      The bible is about as interesting as The Lord of the Rings, which is not very. Although, at least Tolkien was consistent with his plot development.

      after reading bits and pieces of that long essay, that guy is just full of hate and like most other people do what he wants to skew things into his opinion. i wouldn't take anything out of that text and use it as a source. he literally contradicts himself in almost every paragraph i read compared to the texts.

      I hate to say it, but you're an awful jackass. This post isn't exclusively for religious people, the whole point was that the TERM homosexuality was manipulated. Gay people are fighting for their equal rights in this country and the reason they have to fight is because of biblical references, that's why I am interested in it. I will fight against religion influencing our legal system.

      You say I propagate hate, but here you are being hateful, as usual.

      If you really read through the post, you'll see the point of it- that NO ONE follows everything the bible says, and the bible has a lot of strange verses that should be questioned. Read through this story to see what I am talking about.

      EVEN if the bible did not use the term "homosexual", the Religious context of a pure Sexual relation is based on "creating a family" This is why they do not encourage sex before getting married or prostitution.

      Can you get pregnant having sex with another Girl? Use your brain when answering, any "modern answer" will not do it. You simply can't.

      Now, let me make it clear. having sex man to man, it includes the man inserting the Penis in the back of the other male. This is degradation of the body as it was not meant to be this way. The body is the temple and the house of Christ inside of us (that believe in it) and it should not be misused. I'm not radical at all, it is just the way things are. You are simply being brain washed by Homosexuals.

      Whatever anyone says, thinks or comments, it will only stay that way, because reality is: Same sex couples are not accepted by Religions. They are accepted by the Society, so why keep fighting?

      If the bible says. "if you are homosexual, you are not to be welcome" and they don't believe in it, then that is it. They don't believe, they are not Christians, end of the Story.!! :)

    • How about we just consider "God" to be science or biology instead? The most fundamental building block of life is, well, life. Since "God" or pure random coincidence clearly designed the system of reproduction to include both a man and a woman in order to have kids....well, there's your answer.

      That said, who cares if you're gay? That's your choice, good for you. Just don't push it on other people. Frankly I could care less that you're gay as long as you realize I'm not gay and don't look at me like that and God knows don't try to hit on me.

      I've had neighbors and acquaintances that were gay since moving to LA, and, quite honestly, all in all they seem to be much kinder people than most, but these are the gay guys that have respect for the fact that I'm straight and don't say or do anything to make their sexuality an issue.

      There is nothing worse then having gay guys hit on you. This is one of the reasons I feel so bad for women and hate guys that always scam on chicks. If those girls feel half as grossed out and bothered by jerk off guys hitting on them as I have on those handful of uncomfortable occasions, then those guys should just be lucky they didn't get knocked out. If this is how women feel when obnoxious men hit on them, it's just wrong and you should be lucky those girls can't kick your ass.

      So, the summary of this personal venting essay is:

      If you want to be gay, fine, good for you, but just realize that other people are straight and respect that. Please.

      "don't say or do anything to make their sexuality an issue" - this is good on an everyday level with buddies, but the fact of the matter is gay people are fighting for equal rights in this country - most of the reason they don't have those rights is religious motivation. Homosexuality is an important issue today and it deserves to be talked about.

      I have to say, regarding all your quotes from the Bible, you are focusing on the wrong things. You did a great job of choosing places in the Bible where specific instructions on day to day activities are stated. We all know most if not all of those are outdated.
      The focus should be on positive thinking, on optimism for the future, and on a willingness to work hard to get there.
      Since you brought up politics, I have to admit, I misjudged Barack Obama - he may be able to lead us there after all.

      4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

      5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

      6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev.11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

      7. Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

      8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

      9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

      10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town
      together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.
      20:14)

      I know you have studied these issues extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

      Jesus was jewish, and promoted understanding of the Old testament
      "“For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” (John 5:46-47.)"

      "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (NIV, 1st Corinthians 6:9-11)"
      As Mike pointed out, the term "homosexual" was adopted later, so it's hard to say if Paul was really talking about gay men or not.

      Matthew 19:4-5
      "He answered, "Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,"
      The male/female relationship is favored here, but gay people are not directly attacked.

      In short, Jesus didn't really address the issue head on- should we assume that he believed and agreed with the Old Testament?

      Hmmm. I don't know of any verse in which Jesus directly confronts the issue of homosexuality and, like you said, it's not all that an common issue in any other part of the bible either.

      But at any rate, the bible, or even Christianity's, overall on stance seems to be pretty clear to me. It is regarded as immoral. Seems like trying to manipulate the core beliefs of the religion when people shape Christianity into a philosophy that welcomes homosexuality.

      I think Jesus also regarded homosexuality (or whatever the correct, untranslated word for it was exactly) as immoral. One thing is clear though... that Jesus no longer accepted or approved of the customs of punishment that had before him been instituted. See: John 8:7, Matthew 5:17

      His teachings in no way condoned the putting to death of the so called "sinners." Christianity is based, above all, on His teachings, which is embodied in the New Testament. So when you ask what the "bible's" stance on homosexuality is, if you actually mean the Christian bible, then the teachings of Jesus override, for lack of a better word, the customs of the Old Testament, of ancient Israel.

      Indeed, Jesus doesn't seem to have addressed it too much. Here is what is confusing: Jesus built his teachings on the teachings of his religion, judaism . He did stand against some of the more violent things in the old testament. So what pieces of the old testament shall we interpret literally as opposed to metaphorically? If we should take parts of the bible metaphorically, why not all of it? Who decides what is literal and what isn't? Again, I point to this:
      "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"

      It seems very hard to fully reconcile the two different sources. The best argument I've heard for it is Matthew 5:17 that I referenced earlier: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the Prophets... but to fulfill them."

      I guess the argument is this: Jesus' words are the completion of those rules that had been set forth before him. For some reason, (perhaps in some ways unreasonable reason) certain laws were "right" for that period of Jewish culture, but a time came, Jesus' time, when those laws were no longer needed and one thing above all others was important: love.

      When picking and choosing what parts of the bible you believe, it doesn't seem like there is any precise answer, it just comes to a matter of personal interpretation. Interpretation guided by above all else a love for others, which is embodied in tolerance, understanding, etc.

      But it's definitely a slippery slope when even one part of the bible comes into question, because immediately every other part of the book is suspect as well. It no longer seems "infallible."

      Religion doesn't seem to require the convenience of making sense.

      Indeed- doesn't it make sense then that in "our time", we might not need the laws of the bible or religion to base our moral code on, because society ultimately decides that? Perhaps the law of love can conquer all this petty in our time as well, at least we'd like to hope and work for it! I'm not saying that people shouldn't believe whatever they want, because religious freedom is everyone's right, but when it enters into society's legal, medical and educational fields is when those beliefs get called into question.

    • Fundamentalists and Evangelists, some of them atleast, don't listen to anything except the old testament. Jesus said stuff about tolerance and understanding, yet Christians like Randall Terry preach hate and violence.

      It's not all Christians, it's more the Fundies and Evangelists.

      it's true that jesus preached tolerance. one reason he was so hated was his willingness to associate with the "dregs" of society-such as prostitutes and tax collectors. jesus became the new law and the old law-levitican law-was washed away. you can't take one levitican law and disregard the rest for your own convenience. if you think homosexuals should be killed, you better put down that hot dog, because non kosher is deplorable too. just a thought.

I mean hey, the witch burning, snake handling Christians centuries ago may have been a little...excessive...but at least they applied the actual words of the bible, and they didn't selectively follow what they felt, like today.

    • As to the Leviticus quote above, what version of the bible is it from? With every new translation many verses are changed. I don't think we have the exact translation since it's been translated for centuries into different versions. That's just my opinion.

    • I think it's interesting that everyone is saying this is "biblical manipulation". No, no it's not. Although the bible rarely talks about homosexuality, the quote I posted above is in every version of the bible:
      "Leviticus 20:13 NIV -- "`If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."
      It's not just human interpretation here, it is an example of some of the more outrageous things the bible says.

      This is the Old Testament, written way before Christ came. Catholics are way towards the New Testament and actually, we do not take things "Literal" it is the speak and talk that was used thousands of years ago.

      The above is what separates Christian based Religions from other Radical ones.

      because they are hypocrites. christians are called to follow a faith and relationship with jesus christ. religion calls people to do all sorts of craziness. to judge a religion you have to look at it, not its followers. by the nature of the thing you cannot judge a religion by its followers for they are all just trying to follow an ideal that for most is unattainable

      It's time that we, as civilized, educated people, stop looking to ancient, mistranslated, and outdated texts for "wisdom". These books were written in a time when people knew far less about the workings of reality than we know today, and it shows. It never fails to astonish me that in this day and age of science and reason, there are still people among us who cling to the every word of a story book made by some isolated tribe in the middle of the desert as the word of "god".
