The figure might sound alarming, or impossible, but researchers say that even if the actual rate never reaches the 100-percent mark, any upward movement is worrying; two-thirds of the population is already overweight.
"Genetically and physiologically, it should be impossible" for all U.S. adults to become overweight, said Dr. Lan Liang of the federal government's Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, one of the researchers on the study.
However, she told Reuters Health, the data suggest that if the trends of the past 30 years persist, "that is the direction we're going."
lready, she and her colleagues point out, some groups of U.S. adults have extremely high rates of overweight and obesity; among African- American women, for instance, 78 percent are currently overweight or obese.
The new projections, published in the journal Obesity, are based on government survey data collected between the 1970s and 2004.

while i've never been fat , i've got friends who are , and they are a delight to hang out with - together , we are not the type who have to make special arrangements for the bloke who wants a case of michelob ultra when we're pitching in for beer - nor does an argument ever arise over one half of a pizza having certain toppings ,etc. .
i would hate living in a world consisting solely of calorie conscious peeps .
let natural selection have it's way , but it's not gonna take away my chubby mates - not as long as i'm around to pay the tab . - 3 years ago

Our culture has promoted people to become so fat and lazy it's disgusting. What a person allows their body to look like tells you a lot about their mind.
Watching fat people try to make themselves attractive is quite comical though. Like the overweight college "princess types" that still get fake tans, buy expensive clothes, and wear make-up and jewelry.
This just in: You're fighting a lost cause. If you'd spend that time eating healthy and going to the gym instead, you might have a solid foundation to decorate. Otherwise, it's just weird and unsettling to see people that take such poor care of themselves trying to take such good care of themselves in ways that only require money and not effort.
Come on people, these statistics are BEYOND shameful and embarrassing to our nation as a whole. I haven't maintained this body with minimal (but constant) effort my entire life just to have you fat bastards earn such embarrassing labels for all of us.
We need to heal by actually making a concerted effort to improve ourselves not just make excuses. Let's face it, the human body was not designed to be obese, it's just that simple, so you must be doing part of the lifestyle part wrong.
Yes, once you've dug a hole it's hard as hell to climb out, but it's not impossible.
I guess the easiest way to solve the problem would be to educate and regulate younger generations so they never become overweight in the first place.
Doesn't anyone find it odd that humans are pretty much the only animals that grow so morbidly obese and then think it's normal?
How about the fact that America is doing so much worse off in this category than most other countries in the world?
Whose fault is that?

I sincerely think the root cause of this is poor self esteem.
The thin and egotistical will move to europe, the hurt and obese will remain here.
We need to heal as a country to resolve the weight issue.

That's a possibility. The likelihood of that possibility is a whole other question.

Change your title. That's a generalization. There is no way that exactly every single U.S. adult will be obese or at least it is highly unlikely.

What a ridiculous claim.
I live within 3 miles of 3 different gyms and they almost always are packed with fit people all the time.
This article is nonsense.

The bright side is that the likely rise in obesity related deaths will cull from the population those who are too lazy and sedentary to do something about their disgusting state of being.Darwin was right!

I remember growing up, everyone in my family would get on any one of us kids/teens if we started to gain a bit of weight, but they would never say that we were fat and to loose weight, they would talk to us about how staying fit is important & good for our health, how eating the right/healthy food is important to maturing healthy, smart and strong.

That's assuming we are all glutonous. People don't address the real issues of obesity and when people realize what they are and not be overly sensitive or defensive about it (saying that is just how they are). I wonder if this study included these types of behaviours and personalities into accound?
