Edwards admits sexual affair

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 42-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.
Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.
Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father.
A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child.

But he did choose to come out and say it, perhaps under the pressure of threats? Perhaps?

This story is from October 2007. We are in August.
If it was a republican the press whould have made him or her come clean 9 months ago with even less evidence.
That is the fact, let's be honest.
Look at the New York Times did on McVain with much less. Where was the New York Times when it came to John Edwards
Now why would he see this lover in 2008 in a hotel in Beverly Hills, if he had broken and terminated the relation in2006. Don't you think he would sat away from her as far as he could
By the way , what is a neo con ? I hear it all the time. I have no idea what does it really means.

Since the media protects democrat. we have to rely on the National Enquirer for the truth.
What sad day it is ?
Now John Edwards say that he make a mistake due to a lack of judgement.
This is typical lawyer's talk. That's the terms they use in court for no fault divorces when lawyers help someone break their family into pieces
He says, he wants a paternity test. She says no. How convenient.
In reality, it is a lack of character.

I am so sick of the Rielle Hunters out there... give me a break... not one married man, but two. I don't think anyone passed her around... I think she is very typical of women who put everything into their careers, and then too late find out that all the good men are already married, so they decide that married men are fair game, the hell with his wife and children.
I know this is judgmental, but I am not willing to just throw all the blame on the men. Where the hell was this woman's sense of moral boundary?
I got a little fed up with the whole Monica L as victim arguement as well. Monica knew Bill was married, not like Hilary was hiding in a closet, and it wasn't like Monica was some poor susceptible 16 year-old girl... she knew what she was doing and said the hell with Bill Clinton's marriage. I am sick of seeing this crap. I'm not advocating a return to the
Scarlet Letter days either, but how about some moral barometer out there from the men and the women involved in these scandals? If you want a public career, take some public responsibility for you private life before you are admitting to a scandal, not after.

I don't know. I can't really get behind the "this is none of our business" argument. I wish I could, but he did run for president. He is (or was) someone who was being considered for a very high position in a possible Obama administration. This is news. So that leads us to the question, should we care? Sadly, I have to answer that question yes. This does reflect on his character, but worse than that it shows very poor judgment. What does is say about a person's judgment that they would put their ambition for the most powerful political position in the world at risk for some sexual release? What does it say for his judgment that he thought nobody would find out about it? And what does it say for his judgment that he lied about it time and time again. Just like Bill Clinton, this shows a dangerous lack of judgment. It makes me sad to say this, but Democrats dodged a bullet here.

If he raped a child or murdered someone then yes.
We don't know the full story here.If anyone took a slice of my life and analyzed it they would find plenty of opportunities to put out a headline and say that I am a bad person.
They don't know the full story..someone who is bad to someone may have had an injustice done to them..maybe she cheated on him before..we don't need to know this...
He might be a bad person but this does not tell me everything..it's none of our business..really.
I would say that that Foley guy in the Senate is a bad guy..we need to take him own fast for killing the innocence of children.

What most of you people who are justifying his actions as normal human behavior are missing is this:
John Edwards lied about this affair for nearly a year!!! What part of that is justified?
John Edwards knowingly put the entire democratic party at risk had he won the nomination for president.
John Edwards was being considered for VP and yet he still lied about his affair, again putting the party at risk.
Lastly, I had a good friend who was cheating on his wife. Many of her friends knew but she didn't. It was so sad. Eventually, she found out and she and the kids were devastated and the family fell apart. I have to say, although I still associate with this fellow, I would never vote for him for any position of leadership based on his careless actions while leading his own family.
Believe it or not, there are people in this country who do not lie, who have character, who are loyal to their wife and children. In fact there are a lot of them, and they are the only ones fit for leadership.
Those who justify actions like Edwards, saying they are normal human behavior, are those who share the same flaws as Edwards, and they are not fit for leadership either.

I think the most disappointing thing is not that he had the affair, but that he lied about it. I mean people make "mistakes" and we all have our temptations that can sometimes get the best of us. But he did not have the integrity to be honest and admit to it and instead lied and denied everything. The moment he lied, was the moment he became the typical "politician" and was willing to do anything, even lie, to win. Prior to this I was a fan... I was hoping he would somehow snatch the VP spot. But now, I just can't look at him in the same light.

I doubt there ever has been a politician who hasn't cheated on his wife. Politicians generally are alpha males, and alpha males need sex to recharge their batteries as much as they need sex to spread their genes around as much as possible - this is nature.
What is more hurtful to a woman - her husband having a merely sexual affair or her husband falling in love with another woman? The latter, of course.
Finally, Edwards' affair occurred when his wife was in remission, not dying. How do we know what her attitude with regard to her husband's affair was? We don't. Many women who know they will die soon, especially from cancer, and who have young children, encourage their husbands to find someone even while they are still alive - they feel better if they know their man has someone who will support him and care for her children when she is gone.

When mankind genetically engineers the "perfect politician" and regional democracy is effectively and cooperatively compromised for national implementation without controversy--yawn...
I love the "YIKES" factor...if no one gets killed.
Has there ever been a day on post-human earth where someone somewhere has never been killed by human aggression?
From that plateau, everything else seems not a "problem" but rather a "delayed solution."
So let's not get too angry or judgmental when working together to fix things or with those poor bastards who are perpetually scrutinized in every aspect of their lives who attempt to fix things.
I've got maybe twenty good years to go, I know right now I am going to miss this crazy world, and in about twenty seconds I won't give John Edwards another thought regarding this matter.

For all f those that just don't see what the big deal is, the fact is that this person was dicking around while his wife is dying. Making the excuse that Elizabeth was nice enough to let him be happy since she couldn't give him what he wants is despicable. The thing that SHOULD allow humans to rise above their animal instincts is the ability to reason beyond those needs for the sake of those they "love".
The fact that Edwards chose today to confirm this story (one he has emphatically denied and most here, as clay can attest, bought) is further indication that he is attempting to wash this under the bridge in the hopes that most people won't know what happened, what with the Olympics taking over late night and all the news cycles.
What does this have to do with a politician? Character. Not just that he had an affair but that he flat out denied it. But mostly because he did this while his wife is dying...and yes, she is dying, though it may be slow and extended, her days are limited, what a gift from the person who should love you most. That type of character needs to bury itself in the backyard...not find itself in the center of American politics. - 3 years ago

As interesting as this story is I find the comments more fascinating then anything else. It’s amazing that so many people would attempt to belittle the relevance of Edward’s actions.
John Edwards cheated on his terminally ill wife with a woman he didn’t care for, or to put it simply love.
How does that not speak volumes of a persons character and why should we ignore that fact because its “personal?”
Bush ran a failed oil business that was bailed out by the Bin Laden family. That’s a personal dealing that Americans rightfully called into question. Dick Cheney ran Halliburton and sat on the board for EDS, two companies that profited greatly from his VP status. Once again Americans called that personal issue into question as they rightfully should.
So why is it that when John Edwards breaks his marriage vow, and most importantly the part where you’re supposed to love in sickness and in health, Americans attempt to diminish the significance of that action? Its not like America forgot what marriage is supposed to be about. Everyday I hear stories of Americans fighting for the right of gay and lesbian couples to get married and share in the benefits of such an entitlement.
Marriage vows have power in a legal and personal sense. Business contracts similarly have power in a legal and personal sense. So what’s the difference? Simply put business contracts are drafted for the express purpose of making money while marriage contracts are drafted to legally and personally declare the agreement for a monogamous relationship out of love (sometimes at least). Now I was raised to believe that love was the most powerful force known to the world so admittedly I’m a little perplexed that Edwards is not being vilified for the creep that he is.
So fing what that he broke a “personal” contract. The man is completely unfit to lead anything. If he can’t honor a personal contract based on the most powerful concept that all people agree upon then how the hell is he going to honor a vow to defend the constitution and the inherent rights of the people?

Men need sex. It's what they need for intimacy. If their lives are drawing them away from you, please help them, make an effort to be with them.

Why do we give a couple's marital activities public scrutiny in this country? Why do we give power to the people involved to profit from it with our foolish sensationalism.
The story says it was based on the National Enquirer.... a tabloid rag. I haven't seen this paper but I'm betting there was an image of an alien baby being born from a bigfoot on the cover...
Anyway, my point in defending men is because we don't really need to keep going through the Bill Clinton Affair sensation every freaking time there is an election. It's none of our business. It belongs in the private eye between the wives, husbands, and mistresses of the people involved.
Perhaps what SHOULD be going on in the USA is that every single american should be getting scrutinized in their martial behaviors... those who deviate due to passion or perhaps even confusion or chemical induced stupidity should have perhaps a letter sewn on their clothes so that everyone knows that they're easy to manipulate sexually.
I think the "A-mark" would be so common I bet we'd have to build it into our fashion lines. In fact, every married person pouring their hours of commitment into soap operas or reading "historical fiction" is living in a state of emotional adultery right now. They should be spending their time making their relationships better or even making new relationships if they don't have any.
I'm just tired of men being targeted and prosecuted publicly for struggling and failing to defeat their built-in natural function: find mates and reproduce. When you become a public figure you do not swear an oath of chastity. You are not becoming a monk.
Also, it's bad for the entire female liberation movement. Because women are just as bad as men at having affairs. But they can still hide behind the "helpless women" mantle of the 1800's. Well, it's 2008 now... so let's cut out the crap and start acting like equally intelligent and equally passionate individuals.
Thanks.

Good point. The child she bore from this was not one born out of love? So what do you say when the child asks about its father? It's really just sad all around, because I really like his wife, and I truly supported his stances on so many issues apart from this... I simply can't respect him as a person for this and that hurts because I only supported him this time out because I thought he was different. Politics truly is a dirty business.

This is because republicans RUN on being pure and supporting the "family." They are hippocrytes. That is why it isn't tolerated.

I owe you an apology on this one - but I still don't trust the National Enquirer - they have too many years of Bat Boy stories to live down.

Clay, It was in the National Enquirer. That you read that piece of crap might be the reason people don't care much for your views.

I just wonder why he came out with this now. He's out of the race, he's not on any short list for VP, it doesn't make sense to go public like this. Come on John, the first rule, deny, deny, deny.

Why he came out now?? Dude, He was busted, and not by the Washington Post or NY Times, but by The National Enquirer, How bad is that?? He never even denied it.
The guy even tries for the sympathy vote, I'm seriously sad about his wife's health, but It was seen for what it was. Why wouldn't we expect something as low as this?As for the Hillary fantasy... I think i'll watch the sick cow being butchered video to settle my stomach down, and get that image out of my head.

OK, so the democratic party is a party of individuals. I would venture to guess that many of us could give two shits about who has sex with who. Last I checked, it was the puritan republicans who tout that purity and the family unit is holy and uncorruptable.
Personally, I would like to think of myself as a more thoughtful person and assume that the only reason he is coming out now is because he was going to get ousted anyway, and it sounds better coming from him than from someone else, and then being proven true.
Do you guys seriously think that our candidates don't get laid routinely???
They are the rockstars of the intellectuals.
Have you ever been around a politician?
They have a drawing presence and people find them irresistable.
I don't know if I'd bang Hillary... well, of course I would bang Hillary, and any man who has had serious self exploration would likely say the same.
And ladies, don't SIT there and act like you aren't jealous it wasn't you who had that edwards' sexy mug oscilating above your quivering self.
Can you imagine the kind of sexual pressure OBAMA is under right now?!?!?
... not so much McCain...
