Why are Democrats taking money from Walmart?

Where does a politician, or a political party, draw the line in the willingness to sacrifice principles for a few bucks? When we talk about the need to "change" the political environment and the culture of money and politics, isn't there some place where you can say, "right here, this is the perfect example and we aren't going to let this go on anymore"? I would argue that the place to draw the line is the relationship between the Democratic Party and Wal-Mart. And the time to draw the line is now.

I outline the facts in a moment. But, the premise for the need to draw the line now is this: There may be no corporation in American today that has been a more persistent, regular violator of the law than Wal-Mart. There may be no corporation in America that has been as virulently anti-union as Wal-Mart, firing workers repeatedly for trying to organize. There may be no corporation in America that has attacked the rights of workers and undercut the living standards of Americans more than Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart has at least 80 class-action lawsuitsin 41 states pending against it.

Wal-Mart illegally denied full rest or meal breaks in violation of state wage and hour laws-a violation that may cost the company $2 billion.

Wal-Mart abuses women, and is the defendants in the biggest sex discrimination case in history.

Wal-Mart is a habitual tax-dodger.

Wal-Mart's heirs buy expensive paintings but won't give their workers decent health care.

Wal-Mart sued a disabled women, demanding she give back money she won in a settlement.

Wal-Mart exploits children in Mexico.

Wal-Mart lead a global corporate lobbying campaign to block a very modest improvement in Chinese labor laws-because Wal-Mart's business model depends on exploiting cheap labor, here and abroad.

And that's just a sample. Why would any political leader, who represents him or herself to be a defender of the working person, want to be affiliated with such a company?

The answer is clear: money. The Democratic Party is almost even with the Republican Party in the money it receives from Wal-Mart, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The Center's data, published in an article in today's Wall Street Journal (I'll come back to that article in a moment), shows that 12 years ago, Wal-Mart's PAC gave 98 percent of its money to Republicans. In the current cycle, Democrats have received 48 percent of Wal-Mart's PAC expenditures.

Here is the list just for the 2008 cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. In the House, the list is breath-taking in its scope:

Politics of change? How can Democrats purport to be the party of the people, when they take money from corporations like Walmart?

    • In short, because they are dirty politicians, like the rest.
They all take money. It's like a huge racket. A mafia, if you will.

So the Democrats have gained ground and are now only 4% behind the Republicans in the race to see who can get the most money to sell out the common working person?

      That sounds about right.

I assume the Republicans have a plan to regain their lost position?

    • I think this conversation is so important. As I have stated many times before; our government has been taken hostage. I guess what I fail to mention is what most of us are also saying; "we the people" have also been part of that hostage takeover. Corporations have known and developed devious plans, which we succumb to, and one of the best videos that I have watched to learn more on how this was set up is called:

      The Century of Self.

"Sigmund Freud's work into the bubbling and murky world of the subconscious changed the world. By introducing a technique to probe the unconscious mind, Freud provided useful tools for understanding the secret desires of the masses. Unwittingly, his work served as the precursor to a world full of political spin doctors, marketing moguls, and society's belief that the pursuit of satisfaction and happiness is man's ultimate goal."

Now where does that leave us today?

Many people are still asleep; successfully controlled by this type of mind control. But fortunately, many are beginning to wake up, (thanks to the Internet). I try to remain positive and continue to support endeavors such as Current.com, for to me this venue is one [of the best] that will shed light on what has become a dark murky blur.

    • I am not defending Walmart. I was merely noting that they are no worse than all the other corporations, and that focusing on one problem ignores a pervasive sickness unto death on the planet called democratic capitalism, that is corrupt by its very definition.

In many countries the American form of democracy is a four letter word.

The corporations have perfected controlling the people of a country using government corruption and power to maintain a regime of ignorance propaganda and if needed social repression as we have in the USA.

If we think we have any semblance of political freedom one has only to look at the segregation of the political opposition away from the electoral process.

The internet is so fragmented that the MSM still control the minds of a great majority of our citizens and that is not good.

    • Well geneonlbk, does your company practice criminal and immoral practices in foreign countries? Look into Walmart's behavior in Mexico regarding microlending, and all the other "businesses" it is expanding into to make profit by exploiting poor people in developing countries. Look up Dr. Vandana Shiva's talks about what they have done in India just like Monsanto to small businesses and farmers regarding their "food" to put those farmers out of business. And of course how coincidental that you have been talking to employees... of course, if that's true, none of them would admitt their true feelings to you as THEY NEED THEIR JOBS no matter how shitty it is because in all likelihood, Walmart is the ONLY place in town after driving all the small business out!

It makes me sick to see people constantly defend these bastards and other corporations that have done nothing but ruin the lives of others. And no, where I work I get paid for my work and I don't work for exploitive criminals. You might then think of changing jobs if it is like working at Walmart. Matter of fact, based on your experiences I am sure Walmart could use you somewhere selling their cheap China crap made in Indonesian sweat factories by 11 year old girls who get 20 cents an hour to work straight through 16 plus hour shifts with no breaks just so selfish ignorant Americans can wear their cheap clothes. So geneonlbk, if you want to go work at Walmart with their criminal record be my guest. You seem to exemplify the very sort of person that keeps this viscious cycle going. Walmart is no scapgoat to me, it is a CRIMINAL enterprize that needs to be shown the door, one of MANY in this country.

And in general, this wasn't posted to spark another conversation about voting for McCain or Obama, because I do not believe ANYTHING will change regarding corporate America regardless of who is crowned the new King of America. It is about morality in politics and the fact that it does not seem to bother people when Democrats do the same things Republicans do, which speaks volumes to me about the reality of this country. People are so absolutely brainwashed and politically partisan that I find it very hard to believe any real change will come. People say Obama will bring change... well, not with Congressional members like these on all sides continuing business as usual.

    • Even if you manage to get Democratic Legislaters to shun Walmart money, they could still slip it through without the Walmart name on it. We need true election reform. It's plain to see what happens when elections are corrupted. We've been given the perfect example.

    • this is the kind of stuff that makes me feel almost too apathetic to vote. but still I know what is right and standing by and doing nothing is not it!

So, when the revolution comes we all know who's going down first, right?

    • It sounds like political road rage and we are using Walmart as the corporate scapegoat. I read Walmart lowered its energy use 28% since the new CEO arrived three years ago. Have you lowered your carbon footprint even 1%? I also read that Walmart is the largest purveyor or organic foods in the world. I also read that Walmart now has a reasonable health plan. I make it a point to talk to Walmart employees all over the country in my travels over the past five years, since everyone has been dissing the store. I have yet to speak to any Walmart employee who did not like Walmart. Yes they are a sweatshop just like so many other American corporations. Does your company make you work fifty hour weeks for forty hours pay. Well mine does along with all my other salaried friends who are scared to even ask for their rightful measly ten days of vacation each year. Oh yes I noticed that all the shores I shop in only sell goods made in China. The only difference seems to be the price.

    • Well JanforGore, I KNOW that I sound like a broken record, but putting this very simply. Our country is run by corporate interest. We no longer are a county run by "we the people" it is run by special interest, pac money, and of course the revolving doors that are so famous in DC.

Walmart is just one of the many problems we see in USA.

yet...as you say, they don't treat their employees very well,

"A recent study done by The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), details how Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott's compensation is 871 times as high as U.S. Wal-Mart workers. Scott made about $46,575 per day in 2005. That is about three times what the average Wal-Mart worker makes per year."

I got this figure from a 2005 report, but I am sure the only difference today, the gap is wider...

How do people justify this and then I see the level of interest in this article and it makes sense.....(yet the article may climb, I hope)

    • This is bad bad indeed. Dems are not pure and they are in many ways hooked into the whole broken system. One thing that keeps me worried is this:

If we don't vote Republican and we don't vote Democratic we WILL have McCain in office. That is a freak show the Nation and the World will not survive. Global warming will become the smallest problem we face. The amount of death and destruction these people have in mind will increase exponentially.

8 years of Bush? Just a primer. We ain't seen nothin yet.

It truly is frightening, and the sad thing is that so many people are already on board the speeding train heading off into the pit of destruction.

Great comment Twodee. Very important things to think about.
