Russia's Natalia Paderina and Georgia's Nino Salukvadze hugged after winning Olympic silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the women's 10-meter air pistol competition.
The rivals kissed each other on the cheek after standing on the medal podium with China's Guo Wenjun, who won the gold medal in the event.
Waving flower bouquets high, the women smiled broadly at the audience.
"If the world were to draw any lessons from what I did, there would never be any wars," Salukvadze, 39, said afterward, according to media reports. The reports described the two as friends.
Georgia said it launched an operation in South Ossetia on Thursday after artillery fire from separatists killed 10 people. Russia, whose forces entered the republic Friday, accuses Georgia of plotting to wipe out Ossetians loyal to Russia. Georgia says Russia merely wants control of an oil pipeline.
Before Sunday, Paderina and Salukvadze had competed against each other several times, including at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics; the 2005 European Championships in Tallinn, Estonia; the 2006 World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia; and the 2008 European Championships in Winterthur, Switzerland.
Salukvadze's bronze medal marked the first for her country in these Games.
She won a silver medal in the same event two decades ago at the Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, where she also took home a gold for the 25-meter pistol competition. Salukvadze was a member of the then-Soviet Union's 1988 Olympic shooting team.
Sunday's silver medal was first in an Olympics for Paderina, 32.
Despite reports that the Georgia Olympic delegation might return home, team spokesman Giorgi Tchanishvili said Sunday the athletes would stay and compete, according to The Associated Press.
Tchanishvili said that the competitors were ready to leave China if it would help the situation back home, but that Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili sent a message saying the athletes should remain at the Games, AP reported.

If only governments had as much common sense as these two swimmers. I wonder what would happen isf diplomatic decisions were taken out of the hands of a few (elected, I grant) individuals and put to a national vote or referendum?
How else can we be sure that our governments are responding to the genuine majority on deadly serious issues? The Iraq war certainly wouldn't have happened (at least from the British point of view) if Bastard Blair hadn't blatantly disregarded the will of the country.

This is the Olympic games, and countries are supposed to put aside thier differences, atleast while the games are taking place. This very well might just be a good thing for these two countries, Georgia and Russia embracing each other positively on a high scale such as this, the Beijing Olympics.

Definitely good for the games & hopefully politics. Now they better hope they're not conscripted to fight after winning medals in marksmanship.

Though this is nice, I think its time that we separate sports from politics and try not to turn the Olympic games into a commentary on international relations.

I think the olympics have historically been a commentary on politics. Its a world stage and people pay attention.

So if you don't like your ex that has caused you problems ever since the split, but like the person that is willing to help you stay out of an abusive relationship, you become a Bush-puppet...awesome!

Georgia was the one causing problems for Russia ever since the split, not the other way around. Russia's and Georgia's relationship goes back hundreds of years and is anything but abusive. The Russian Empire saved the Georgians from total annihilation at the hands of the Ottomans. When Georgia happily joined the Russian Empire, they numbered only 75,000 people. After a year in the Empire their population was over a million.

I enjoy the fact that most countries put their animosity aside for the olympics, a sport where everyone is on the same level, the best of the best.

What if, instead of wars, countries could settle their differences in games like the Olympics, and win or lose, still hug and be friends afterwards? Ah, what a dream!

sorry mate but you asked for this:
Curling: Winter Olympics
Hockey: international but esp all of Europe and south asia
Table Tennis: International but especially Asia
taekwondo: Most popular Martial art in the world, I do it myself.
Basketball: big in Europe getting big in Thailand and japan, big in China
Everyone of those is far more popular worldwide than baseball.
another problem is baseballs length, not ideal for the olympics.

yeah totally.... baseball is a majorly american sport, and isn't popular outside the US in the same way that say basketball or ice hockey or even american football are. As for Softball... that does seem more popular on a world scale, we played that at my school in the UK, we didn't play Baseball.
Baseball just isn't that exciting a game anyway, it goes on to long, and is only fun cos of the hotdogs and beer. - 3 years ago
