Israel backs Georgia in Caspian oil pipeline battle with Russia

DEBKAfile discloses Israel's interest in the conflict from its exclusive military sources:

Jerusalem owns a strong interest in Caspian oil and gas pipelines reach the Turkish terminal port of Ceyhan, rather than the Russian network. Intense negotiations are afoot between Israel, Turkey, Georgia, Turkmenistan and Azarbaijan for pipelines to reach Turkey and thence to Israel's oil terminal at Ashkelon and on to its Red Sea port of Eilat. From there, supertankers can carry the gas and oil to the Far East through the Indian Ocean.

Aware of Moscow's sensitivity on the oil question, Israel offered Russia a stake in the project but was rejected.

Last year, the Georgian president commissioned from private Israeli security firms several hundred military advisers, estimated at up to 1,000, to train the Georgian armed forces in commando, air, sea, armored and artillery combat tactics. They also offer instruction on military intelligence and security for the central regime. Tbilisi also purchased weapons, intelligence and electronic warfare systems from Israel.

These advisers were undoubtedly deeply involved in the Georgian army's preparations to conquer the South Ossetian capital Friday.

In recent weeks, Moscow has repeatedly demanded that Jerusalem halt its military assistance to Georgia, finally threatening a crisis in bilateral relations. Israel responded by saying that the only assistance rendered Tbilisi was defensive.

This has not gone down well in the Kremlin. Therefore, as the military crisis intensifies in South Ossetia, Moscow may be expected to punish Israel for its intervention.

    • If you don't think Israel is involved in all the Oil conflicts, then you haven't heard about their ambitious project. How else are they going to pay for this huge development if they don't have control of the Arab oil?

    • Oil through Israeli pipeline?

      A pipeline to pipe oil to Haifa was even hinted at when Iraq was attacked, so I have no problem believing that the Israeli govt.and this govt. may be formenting what is occurring in Georgia now from behind the scenes as well as believing Russia is also a willing adversary because they are all after the same prize....the easiest and cheapest way to get oil to Asia and other markets even if it results in the deaths of innocent people. There is no right side in this.To completely deny Israel and this govt.are not part of what is going on there now is to be ignorant of the geopolitics of this area.

      Sure, but isn't this what we're discussing?
      "they saw this conflict miles away, like everyone else, and decided to better prepare Georgia"

      And besides, when you throw words like "the facts" around, it sounds a little defensive. I think everyone is just characterizing what they believe to be a pattern of behavior by Israel to become embroiled in conflict. Whether it's true or not, doesn't change the perception. Perhaps this is an existentialist question?

    • That's the last time I take Israel to another nightclub. Every time we go out, they get in a fight over someone's sexy natural resource. Or they're like 'hey they won't stop shooting rockets at me when I'm dancing.'
      Frankly, I'm sick of it, and I feel under appreciated.

    • So educate me. General opinion all over the world, as well as facts, seem to back me up. If there's something I'm missing, please let me know about it. Correct me. But please, spare me the GWB/Cheney/Israel conspiracy theories, that cabal is already way too busy according to you guys to have orchestrated this as well. Maybe they're outsourcing?

    • No, it's not. US and Israel have an interest in the oil pipeline, as does Western Europe and Turkey, but why would they want this fight to occur? All it means is that their interest gets screwed, the pipelines get shut down, and the prices go up. It makes zero sense for them to want this fight to occur. You're looking at this issue through blinders. Israel already agreed to stop selling weapons to Georgia at Russia's request. This is about Russia reasserting itself as a world power and showing it's might. That's why they didn't agree to the ceasefire, that's why they've already pressed on past South Ossetia into Georgia. It's pretty clear.

      Let me guess your response...this is the mainstream media, it's a coverup for GWB and his cronies along with Israel pushing for more oil. Because that's exactly what they want right now, a conflict with Russia...please.

    • THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GWB. You can blame him for a lot, but he can't become a scapegoat for every single little thing. You could just as easily blame Georgia's affiliations with the EU and Turkey. You'd be wrong, but you could...This is a power play by Putin. russia is looking to assert itself these days.

    • Yes, and he isn't the only conductor it seems. Putin seems more than willing to join the ride as well as others. Let's divvy up the sides for WW3 to see how accurate we are since it's only a matter of time. And all because of a fossil fuel we don't need to fight over if we have the damn vision to look beyond this. Unbelievable.

      people will stop going to war for the black gooey stuff.

      if it cant happen, then i want to go to some remote part of the world, live off of coconuts, and build a bomb shelter deep in the ground.
