US refuses Israeli request for weapons to use against Iran's nuclear facilities

Israel presented its list of desired military hardware and other backup for the strike during President George Bush's visit to Jerusalem in May, the Israeli newspaper, Ha'aretz, said.
This was turned down with Washington officials insisting Israel give the US prior notice if it plans an attack.
The US is among a group of nations which has sought to engage with Iran over its nuclear activities by offering a package of incentives if Tehran suspends uranium enrichment.
Iran insists it is interested only in civil nuclear power but the US and EU claims it plans to build a nuclear bomb.
Israel, which has its own undeclared nuclear arsenal, has warned Iran repeatedly against developing its own. A major Israeli air force exercise in June was viewed by observers as a veiled warning to Iran that Israel has the capability to attack the country's nuclear facilities.
According to Ha'aretz, Bush held talks with the country's prime minister, Ehud Olmert, and defence minister, Ehud Barak, during which they requested "certain specific items of military equipment" as well as diplomatic backing.
The paper - which does not specify the hardware sought – says that the US took this to imply an attack on Iran was imminent and sent a "strong message" to Israel not to do so.
It also demanded prior warning of any attack, and offered in compensation to improve Israel's missile defence systems.
Israel rejected this and warned it "reserves the right to take whatever action it deems necessary" if diplomatic efforts achieved nothing.
Ha'aretz says Israel had hoped Bush would order an American strike before leaving office but that this was seen as unlikely. The country fears that an Israeli attack "would give Iran international legitimacy for its programme, which it currently lacks" and portray Israel as the aggressor.
Israel believes that Iran will continue to stall, perhaps even temporarily suspending uranium enrichment, "in an effort to see out the rest of Bush's term in peace", the paper added.
"Finally, a voice of reason. Maybe, WWIII is not inevitable."

What is the problem with the Israelis trying to tell sovereign states how to go about their business?
Israel have nuclear weapons, so why can't Iran.......
Oh, I get it, so they're the only country in the region to threaten cataclysmic force when things don't go their way.If you ask me, countries with nuclear weapons are bullies and countries who want to develop nuclear weapons are the kid who take up karate for self defense, it's that simple!

This actually really surprises me that the US denied Israel weapons for a fight against Iran. Given the US history of helping to create the state of Israel and granting them almost every other wish, this really surprises me that the Bush was wise enough to deny Israel, "certain specific items of military equipment." Although diplomatic support is a different story and that just may drive us in to a cold nuclear winter.

AllIknowis----blank. Who has the right to decide who has weapons and who does not? Every country should have the right and ability to defend itself. Honor killings, female circumcision, etc. are all backwards practices totally unrelated to Islam. Are drunk wife beatings part of the Christian faith?

There's more to all this than meets the eye. Give it time and everything will be exposed. No one is going to attack Iran. No one has the tools. Between Iraq, Afghanastan, Georgia, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and the conditions in the American economy does anyone think even te numbskull in the Blackhouse knowes he has no troops and no money. The asshole's greed for oil and bombs led him to make bad decisions and invade Iraq which has cost America alot of money, all it's credibility, not to mention hundred's of thousand innocent lives. America is not picking a war with anyone unless they ouble the employment of Blackwater and Amrica does not have the money. In short, America is in a very weak position because the boob in the Blackhouse screwed up.

For any doubters out there about who the terrorist state is (Iran or Israel) just look how the Israelis treat the Palestinians. Iran may not be a great country by any moral standards, but Israel is the agressor. If history tells it, Israel will attack Iran and the U.S. will be right behind them, directly or indirectly. I am not defending Iran by any means, I am just saying what most Americans are afraid to say or blind to see.

I don't get it. It sounds like children playing with their toys. "we can have nuclear weapons and keep advancing the technologies on said technologies but no one else can, and if you do we will wage war using those weapons"
I for one am for complete dissarmament of nuclear weaponry but i also believe that a sovereign nation is entitled to advance itself in all aspects of itself, whether it is militarilly or domestically. - 3 years ago

Alliknowis, that was an aside to bansheewail. But yes our present record, and I refer to the Iraq debacle, will make it difficult to mediate in any peace talk. The big stick theory came from the turn of the last century (T.R.). Yet you smugly refer to all Muslims as being from the middle ages. That's would be termed as a sweeping statement. But if you think that the Iraqui war gave us some type of street cred with the rest of the world you won't be convinced. True logic comes from sound reasoning.

Well, at least someone somewhere is pumping the breaks on this one. We need to all just calm down and see if we can work this out without needless killing. It continues to baffle me why humanity is so resistant to peace. Such a simple concept...

I was quoting from "bluestranger" post, and i was refering to our record of doing the right thing over the past century or so. It's the Roosevelt line of "talk soft but carry a big stick" Why would ANY agressor country negotiate with a country they perceived to be weak? People with logic like you are a lot of why we're in these messes.
Our enemy doesn't think like we do, or hold the same values we do. We have to speak their language, remember most of these people are operating like it's the middle ages, it's when they stopped evolving when they adopted islam.

This is simply juvenile bigotry. And last I checked, Roosevelt is dead. This is the 21st century. It is a different world with different priorities. Quoting an old president's old solution as a possible solution to the quagmire that is Iran is ridiculous.
Furthermore, it is loose talk about Islam that has lead to many of our troubles. "Most of these people" are people just like you and me, who want peace and stability. There are some regions of the Middle East that are not as developed as others, but the same could be said for the United States. And it is simply bigotry to say they stopped evolving because of Islam. This is like middle america has mad no progress because they believe in Christianity.
Your statements are doing nothing but promoting bigotry and a shoot first ask questions later philosophy that will only continue the violence. Please, for all of us, pick up a book so at least some of your words won't be wasted on expressing hateful and outlandish ideas.

Hey if a method works it works, we quote and follow the ideas of lots of dead people. If i'd quoted Gandhi you wouldn't of responded the same. And it may of sounded a bit sweeping of the comment of muslims, let me repose it as with in the bell curve, about 80%.
With about 10% or less being the violent over the top. About what the communists and the nazis started with.
You need to be there and see for yourself read their teachings to see how they live. You ever hear of honor killing, cutting your wife's nose off because of something she said, or female circumcision? not things a civilized or evolved country do.

Actually, I said an old president's old solution, which was a direct reference to quote you used as a possible policy solution, which is short sighted.
And I'm quite familiar with what goes in on the Middle East as to why I said your views are simply ignorant bigotry. Yes, their are some unsavory things we view in their culture, but you lack the context or education for that matter to have an honest conversation about it if you feel that "10% are less violent." This is pure, bigoted speculation. You are simply afraid of the people of the Middle East, and this fear is feeding your prejudice and ignorance. Your views are simply another example of the ignorance that keeps our country from truly being a progressive and free nation for all.

"our present record" might make it easier to lead someone to the peace table. A rogue state like Iran might take peace talks more serious if they know we have the hardware to take them out and the stones to use them. Libya has become a better citizen of the world.

Diplomacy will work in this situation only if Israel thinks it still has the upper hand...which it does, for now.
The moment it feels that Iran has gotten too big for its britches, so to speak, is the moment they will seriously consider sending a few of their upgraded F-16s (...or, perhaps more likely, a few stealthed UAVs) across the boarder to deal with the problem...again; with or without the approval of a weak, lame duck, administration in Washington.

Diplomacy....maybe? The other tactics have obviously not worked out as planned. I use the word "Planned" very loosely. The changes I keep seeing around the world seem to echo Obama's campaign speeches. Wether it be energy policy or "talk before you bomb", his vision for our future is starting to be adopted by current leaders. Common sense in leadership is refreshing.
