    • "Spanish papers have decided that the issue is something that psychiatrists should decide rather than historians..." is how the article ends...

Well, that just about sums it up...I would like to review the evidence in favor of the Templars, though, just to see what grounds they have for even suggesting such a lawsuit...that would be some serious record keeping...

    • Here is a bit on what I think. The topic where "The Pope Sued" is in the headlines is always interesting to me due to the embedded paradox. The Pope is supposed to represent a religion based around a loving man and when all lof this comes about... namely $$$, it just baffles me!!! Possessions and cash are two thing that Christ would have just let be. So, likewise, if a group calls them selves followers of Christ, I would think they would at least try to follow his example. Just my two cents.

It doesn't matter who you were in a past life, violence toward anyone or anything is wrong, if the knights templar believe in a civil just society, and that the end of the world is in 2012 they shouldn't make it so, there is no reason to destroy what civilization the world has left just because your relatives were treated wrong in the past. THAT WASN'T YOU WHO WAS MISTREATED. So get over yourselves, and how dare anyone, including the pope clergy and everyone else in the entire world believe that they can claim ownership of any gold artifacts and secrets stolen from the 'holy land'

    • Also if I may be a comment hog and make another one, the church, has done plenty of wrong things, the whole pay more money and you get to heaven faster thing, let us not forget the spanish inquisition, the rewriting of the bible, the making of Jesus' wife into a whore, and plenty of other grave wrongdoings. The templars' case although it is sad and indeed a savage miscarriage of justice, is just one of many. How about the millions of muslims and other non-christians that were slaughtered during the crusades? or the victims of the spanish inquisition? If decendents of templars get retribution do we just forget about the others that deserve it as well? Or do we just forget the whole thing and move on?

    • There is also evidence that the Templars were trading and doing business with their Muslim rivals. It has been suggested that a great deal of scientific and cultural sharing was going on between the Templars and the peoples of the Holy Land. Nothing is ever black and white Saladin. Of course the Coptic peoples of Egypt were being persecuted by the Arabic Muslims who had conquered Egypt so I guess everyone involved is "disgusting".

    • This, I hope will never work. I am not saying what the church did to the templars was fair or even right, but the people who claim to be relatives of ex templars don't deserve any of the churches money, what did they do? Did they go fight a war against people they did not understand and therefore thought were heathens? No. It is sad that wars like the crusades still exist; why not educate instead of accuse? Why not try to stop things like this from happening to people who are alive today?
And besides, the templars stole all the riches from Jerusalem and other middle eastern states they conquered in the first place.

    • The templars did a lot of bad things. But remember it was under the direct orders from the pope. And back then you did what the pope told you or you were excommunicated from the church. And back then, that was a fate worse than death. It was after the templars got rich and powerful that the pope turned on them and tortured and killed them.

    • it's about damn time!! the Papal church has been responsible for atrocities throughout the ages and it is high time the Knights Templar reclaimed what they were trying to protect for all of us to have... Saladin, THEY ARE NOT EVIL RUTHLESS BANDITS!! They were trying to protect secrets that the church wanted to suppress, trying to keep them safe for us to have so we would have knowledge of the past that we don't have now, no thanks to the papacy. There is mixed lore, and there are haters out there due in part to papal idiocracy, but what happened 701 years ago was wrong and it is now being righted, finally.

    • this is for the clueless people out there who don't watch the history channel. the knights templar were at first agents of the church sent to the holy land to take it back from the so called godless muslims. but after a few defeats the chruch and many turned their back on them. also the knights templar were the bankers or loan sharks of their day. they loaned money to kings and other people. history shows that the french king didnt want to pay back his loans so he said knights templar worshiped the devil. we all know kings and popes back then didn't need to have proof to do what they wanted. so hundreds of the knights templar were tortured and then killed so the scum king could get away without paying a debt. as for the pope he saw the money that the knights templar were making and bankers and decided it should be the churches or more his. popes back then were the true devils in the world. as said before the church ( pope) had people tortured and or killed with little or no proof of anything a person was said to do. you believe the world was round you were put to death, you believed the sun was center of the universe tortured and put to put to death unless you were wealthy then you were held captive in your own house for years. middle or dark ages, the true reason popes then wore that big hat was to hide the horns of the devil. not hard to figure if you watch the history channel its all there.

My Great great was one of your own,and died by "Friendly Fire". the history of the Templar is not so cut and dry, and, the disputes among us was what brought us down... Not the Church. to all of the Church, I do think there was wrong, but, you were not the ones who did it,and we all have hear say,few facts.
Dont pay them nothing, give all your weath to charity(the churches not personal, how could anyone take a hundredsyear old fued personally),and bow out gracefully.the "Church" only makes it harder for Christians.

    • Maybe they can make a deal... the church can apologize for slaughtering them after the Knights Templar returns the booty it stole from Jerusalem and apologizes for all of the people they slaughtered. There were no good guys in what happened during the Crusades and after... there was killing and slaughter and deception on all sides as well as greed. If anything, the church owes reparations to all of the families of the women it killed as a result of the Malus Malificarum... Hmm, I'm a woman... maybe I'll sue too.

    • I am looking forward to the day when the entire Babylon Religion system comes crashing down. That would include the Judeo Islamic Christian system based on the worship of the God of Abraham.

This whole system has become the most coopted and destructive force on the planet. I know there are sincere and heartfelt individuals who have integrity and truly wish to do no harm, but I am talking about the religious belief systems themselves. They rob human beings of life by tricking them into believing in a reward in the after world, or no reward at all. Talk about the mother of all deceptions. Humans are being robbed of their divinity by being convinced that we are fundamentally evil and we are in need of salvation. Heck you get told something long enough you actually start believing it, especially when that belief system is reinforced by other institutions besides your religion.

This system is colluding with the money changers to ensure that the followers will all be obedient little sheep and pay their taxes and be good little hamsters and do what their told. Consume, work, spend, consume. People are merely chattel.

A true religions would facilitate every member's recognition of their divinity and their worth and nurture their innate capacity to love and express kindness and goodness, not intolerance, judgment, hatred, and genocide.

    • to me a billion 150 is for inflation the church and france sold thousands from the knights templar because the french king didnt want to pay back his loan to them and the church wanted their share. back then the church was run by crook as history shows that the chruch sold thousands of dollars from people.sure it was a long time ago but as someone said better later than never. you look thorough history the church has hurt more people than they have helped sorry to say but that is the truth. midle ages and many wars were fought because someone didn't believe in what they did. church hurt many people jews, muslims etc. tortured, maimed and killed all because you didn't beleive the way they said you should. god is not like that but they used his name as the lever to hurt and kill people.

So some people were dicks to your ancestors 700 years ago and somehow you deserve to be compensated? What bullshit.

    • "But their motive is not to reclaim damages only to restore the 'good name' of the Knights Templar.

'We are not trying to cause the economic collapse of the Roman Catholic Church, but to illustrate to the court the magnitude of the plot against our Order,' said a statement issued by the self-proclaimed modern day knights."

All they're asking is for the Pope to recognize that the Church did something wrong in 1307 and apologize for it.

Do you even know what the Roman Catholic Church did to the Knights Templar? It stole money, land, burned members at the stake and killed many many of the knights. I personally think the heirs to the Knights Templar should get the money they are asking for, the land would have gotten a huge increase and so would the money and as for the killings that would be inexcuseble (spelling?). the money the heirs are asking for may be too much to ask for but they should certainly get some money from the church for what it has done to them in the past.

I think they should get at least half of what they are asking for mostly because of the 700 year time span of the killings and all the stuff the Roman Catholic Church had done to the Knights Templar.

    • Kinda hard to prove that the people suing themselves had any rights to it even if you accept the "pariah" defense it's still difficult to prove they had any demonstrable damages from it.

If that were the case then every descendant of the Inquisition could sue for damages and that is just about everybody.

They deserve an apology like Gallileo got but his descendants didn't get any money for what they suffered either.

    • An apology is good, billions of dollars? no.

If the Pope back then didnt do what they did these people sueing wouldnt be alive. I know its a wierd wya of looking at it but its true. i think an apology is good enough.

My family history has been wronged so many times but I dont look at the people with evil eyes. My ancestors' farm was pillaged and burnt by Union troops during the Civil War, but do you see me asking the US government for reparations? And that was only 150 years.

The only time I think someone should get reparations is if it hapened to somebody alive today or the people who committed the crime are alive today. But this happened 700 years ago, jesus.

    • Good! What the Vatican did to the Knights Templar was unconscionable, and it ruined many families. That this happened 700 years ago doesn't matter. I think that these heirs are likely using the document recently found in the Vatican library whereby the pope of that time admitted that what the church did was wrong, exonerated and un-excommunicated the members of the Knights Templar, something that was never made public at the time or since, until that document was unearthed.
