Rice signs missile defense deal with Poland

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart signed a deal Wednesday to build a U.S. missile defense base in Poland, an agreement that prompted an infuriated Russia to warn of a possible attack against the former Soviet satellite.

    • For eighteen months, the USA balked at Poland's gargantuan demands of tens of billions of dollars as well as an arsenal of Patriot missiles in exchange for allowing the USA to install this missile defense shield on Polish land. But, as soon as the USA was totally humiliated by Russia in Georgia, it ran post-haste to Poland and agreed on everything! Now, both the missile defense shield and Patriot missiles are notoriously ineffective and inaccurate, so Russia needs not fear them - they are angered by the principle, and understandably so. Meanwhile, Poland is laughing all the way to the bank.

    • I view this in two different ways.

      Firstly I see Poland as a country seeking support and protection in light of the growing tensions between Georgia (the US) and Russia (and now Syria).

      Secondly it seems that the US is once again exerting military influence where it need not. Any way we could stay out of an international conflict for once?
