"A voting system used in 34 states contains a critical programming error that can cause votes to be dropped while being electronically transferred from memory cards to a central tallying point, the manufacturer acknowledges.
The problem was identified after complaints from Ohio elections officials following the March primary there, but the logic error that is the root of the problem has been part of the software for 10 years, said Chris Riggall, a spokesman for Premier Election Solutions, formerly known as Diebold."
And the winner is? I guess whoever owns the machines.....

I'm not so sure I'd put our ballots in the hands of the post office, who could lose them or have them stolen. Wouldn't be hard to pick out which were votes, and which are the poorer, inner-city neighborhoods.
Just check out what this AZ postal worker did:
http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/stories/phoenix-local-news-082508-postal-work...Plus, once ballots are gone, they are gone forever. It costs too much to hold another election if the election officials can semi-prove that those votes wouldn't change the outcome. Such was the case in Carteret County in 2004:

I think every state needs to go back to paper ballots. There have just been too many 'accidents.'

Recently in my city in CA we went back to paper ballots--thank goodness. There has to be a paper trail somehow or we will have another president who was not elected. Our nation cannot handle another evil shrub clone or our world will turn upside down in ways we cannot even fathom.

Actually, paper ballots are faulty, too. Plus they can be manipulated by election workers LEGALLY.
For example, in the 2005 LA mayoral election, election workers pulled ballots that they thought had marks that were too faint for the scan machine to read and marked over what they interpreted to be the voters' intended selections. Sound familiar?
To get free and fair elections you have to look at the entire system, from the laws down to the procedures, equipment and training that pollworkers receive.
