im completly divided, i laregly used to think we should let nature do the talking, but on the other hand if it was my mother, father, brother or someone close I would want them to have the option to leave with dignity, on their terms, with as little suffering as possible, but where do you draw the line between compassion and convenience?

.... I want to type a great response .... but it'd look pale in comparison to that beautiful article. Really made me think about the way I take my mom (and family) for granted.

I'm not going to lie, as a religious person I can honestly say that I believe death is one of those things that you leave to the "big guy upstairs," but I applaud her bravery throughout the entire situation. I kind of liked the fact that death looked her right in the eyes and she looked back with a smile on her face. I wish I was that brave. R.I.P.

We should all have the option to die with dignity instead of being kept alive merely to postpone death, without considering someone's quality of life, limitations & level of pain.

Wow. Great post. Such an easy read, but it's so moving and interesting. My mother has almost died several times (brain aneurysm, stroke, etc) and she still lives in terminal pain. I really related to the human side of this story, how the family still fights and fumes, how the mother seems so distracted, how the feelings are hard to really comprehend and seem surreal. Thank you for this post.

As a Mom, I recognize the 'clean the toilets' as a deversionary tactic to keep them busy and focussed on something other than the horrific task of watching her die.
I believe each person should have control over their own life (or death). However, things happen for a reason and we all have lessons to learn and things to learn in this life and I wonder if we end it ourselves if we'll have to 'start over' in another life.

she didn't seem to be a happy person to begin with , and i can only suppose her exasperated husband won't really miss her too much . he can at least have some peace in knowing she took herself out rather than him having had to murder her when task-mastered into cleaning toilets at some ungodly hour .

read the last paragraph of his diary - after you've actually read the article itself - and let's talk about "sick" .

Yes, but you have no sympathy for the woman? It sounds like she was trying to get all the responsible and "motherly" things done before she died. Wouldn't you be acting strangely if you knew when you were going to die?

very interesting. reading this story is like reading about an alternate dimension of reality. catheters to kill yourself with, administered by the doctor? will this ever happen in the USA? I personally hope so.
