Maybe the 2008 Beijing Olympics were really about the emergence of China as the new super power, and their ceremony demonstrated their enormous strength over their minions. If that is the case, then how should London respond? Some have said we should go in a completely different direction and have a ceremony that expresses our values of individualism and creativity. Where China can coerce thousands into acting and working in unison, London should express that we have thousands acting and working of their own accord and of their own free will?
If we can't come up with a clever response then maybe we should just wheel out Simon Cowell, a mediocre pop singer, a red London bus and make sure it rains. Fish and chips anyone?

The chinese olympics were full of BS. The people of China are under such pressure from the govt. all those "volunteers" ya right.
London never said they would spend I think what was it...40 billion was it? on the Olympics, that is a bit irresponsible.
That money should be spent on improving the country.
yes the Olympic opening ceremony and architecture and closing ceremony were good. Id like to see a country do a wonderful job without forcing hundreds of thousands of people to relocate, and without showing a fake bs version of their country.

2012 is going to be a damn shambles compared to Chinas effort. I think ill become a French citizen for 2012 and make fun "ohf ze stoopid eynglish" and when the shame burns away and leaves a trail of cheap over the counter anti-depressants, i may return.
PS. What makes Britain..... Britain is that we do absolutley everything half-assed. And we have a compllete history of "Almost did". I expect no less, and would demand no less of this country!
As Bill Baily said. 60% of Britains days are overcast. Instilling in us a slight whimsical melancholy. In other words. We dont care less.

In reply to contrick, the cockneys don`t speak english as described in the english dictionary. There is no "w" in report. There is no "I or a" in van. There is no "w" in all. Wall is not pronounced worw. Therefore, any certificates acquired in schooling for spoken english using the cockney language, are worthless. I have papers in GCE English literature and language, and i`ve worked in London on and off for many years. The population are pre education system left overs that no government has put right.

London will succeed if it makes the legacy of its Games the athletic competition and the regeneration of a rundown part of town, rather than lavish ceremonies and the kidology displayed by a nation whose human rights record remains disgraceful and is unlikely to change as a result of hosting the Olympics.
China spent billions on these Games while 30 million of its population is officially starving. It demolished homes to make space for venues.
Hardly in the spirit of the Olympics.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Olympic Games are not about the openings, right? They are about the sports, they are about the world coming together for a couple of weeks. So I don't understand why people keep on talking about London or any other host beating Beijing's opening ceremony. They don't necessarily HAVE TO be better.
But if it WAS about the ceremonies: Nobody can match or do better than China. Why? Because London or any other host might be able to match the technology, they might be able to match the number of performers and the precise synchronization, but they can NEVER match the rich culture and history of China. 5000 years old is no joke. Comparing that with a country like USA which is what? Only 230 years old or something? HA! - 3 years ago

Knowing the UK Government, who ever it may be. They will drape a bit of bunting around Wembley, put there free of charge by benefit chavs and benefit druggies.
The underground will fail under the sheer strain of volume, poor advanced planing and maintainance.
Asian terrorist will have a field day. The olympic pool will be created by closing Wembley`s doors while its pouring down. For those who have never been here, we have more than our fair share of rain. If a victorian sewer fails, that`s London all over, full of it. You may need an interpreter to understand the cockney language. Pick pockets and petty thieves
will add to the probem. Say hello to the real London - 3 years ago

Having lived in London (specifically, Wembley) all my life, I moved away because it got me down. People talk about there being 'one London', but at ground level, on a day to day, we come across as a fairly disparate lot.
That said, even I fail to recognise this particular portrait of misery. You've listed 'Asian terrorists' (I didn't realise Asia itself had a beef with London), 'pickpockets' and 'the cockney language' as causes for concern in the 'real London'.
Do we come from the same London - or is this some worrying hybrid between a Dickens novel and a Sun headline?
We have enough substantial, genuine problems to deal with before the 2012 games without having to generalise new ones out of thin air.
Chin up, sunshine - its not all doom and gloom!

Yeah I have to say 'hats off to China' - you put on one hell of a show and organised a great Olympics. They can definitely feel proud of themselves for that.
I have no idea how we can follow that but we obviously cannot muster up thousands of people working in sync and we have a lot smaller budget. We could do a lot with technology, lighting and projectors though - as they did to good effect in the Birds Nest.
Our logo is slowing growing on me now as well.

The BBC tried their best today to reassure the nation that the London 2012 Olympics can be just as impressive - citing the 'lack of atmosphere' (and in many cases, an actual audience) for many events, both in Beijing and the other host cities.
However, in terms of sheer spectacle, I think China have got the competition beat, and beat *good*.
If we can sort out the London Underground, we may have half a chance of pulling the Olympics off successfully.
For this reason alone, I'm not convinced.

This Olympics was the best I have ever seen.China has shown the people who were talking about so much pollution that You can't even breathe.China cleaned up very well to welcome the world.Blue skies and a calm breeze greeted guests. The Opening and closing ceremony was spectacular.I don't think any other country can top china organization, integration an flawless work shown by them.China has come a long way and the chinese people should celebrate and feel proud as the world will remember these games for decades to come.
