Organisers of the London 2012 Olympics have put themselves in an extraordinary controversy after an image of convicted murderer Myra Hindley was used in a montage to promote the next games.

The image was made out of children's hand prints, and was the work of a British artist.

    • An amazing piece of British art, I'm pleased it is there, making a piece of art that challenges and promotes thought and conflict being made from such a horrible tragic incident, shows an unfortunate part of english history being made into art, which makes it a good example of british culture, despite the fact not all brits would agree.

    • I understand why the image caused so much controversy as it was taken out of context, but now that we all know it is a work of art as opposed to a simple portrait, why make such a fuss?

    • Ugh, ok so it's an important art piece, and represents our cultural heritage, I agree with that - but to flash it in such a montage just makes it appear like a regular portrait without context - and imagine how those who could still be affected by the Moors muders would feel seeing that...

    • could they have made a bigger mistake?

      yes this is controversial art

but surly those in charge must have been aware that large clusters of sensitive souls in Britain- who have nothing better to do, would have been sitting up with gleaming eyes eager to take as much offense from all of this as physically possible

but who said the organizers didn't have a sense of humor

after all its only the worst publicity it could have got
short of london being attacked by terrorists.

    • I want to believe it was a honest mistake.
The portrait was in a set of images used to showcase Tate's collection and must have ended up in the montage for lack of attention.

    • Maybe it's a thoroughly apt image?
After all, the advertising/sponsorship behemoth that is the Olympic Games' raison d'etre is getting its claws ever-deeper into our children's unsuspecting minds.

    • when you produce a piece of art this thought-provoking and controversial, does it really need more than a few seconds of show-time amongst other images? sure, charles manson is american, but from Cali, not Georgia. also, there is no thought-provoking controversial artwork of him nationally recognized. you aren't seeing the art. the chinese and their censorship have had more influence than i thought. free and liberal is where it is at.

    • I think as a piece of art it is a thought provoking piece, but if it is shown for only a few seconds amongst other, more easily absorbed images, then its effect is not different from a regular picture of a murderer. IN EFFECT, it's like putting charles manson on a montage for the Atlanta games in 1996.

    • as an art piece, i find it fascinating. it's historical and painstakingly accurate in eliciting a fear that is personally intriguing. using children to create this piece was brilliant. i'm not understanding the hooplah. this is a great advertisement of the intellect and edge of all things london.

    • The stupidity is just astounding, unbelievable. This was part of the showcase to set up London's games, at the end of an incredibly succesful Olympics in China which will be nigh on impossible for us to beat. WHAT?!!!!
