How convenient that the polce have disrupted the disruptors of the RNC... the additional illegal spying on Americans has come in handy for them, to let them know where the protestors are...god forbid if there should be a protest of the crimminal activity that's been going on, in our capitol, for the last eight years. Is this America or are we living in just another third world county..?

It looks like they're going beyond the pre-emptive strike and now are into pre-crime arresting people for what the *might* do
It's a shame they don't even have the benefit of pre-cogs like they did in "Minority Report"
I suppose they'll get the results of the intimidation they want even if the RNC doesn't live up to its purpose with so many speakers canceling their speeches.

When a large protest group names itself after a 60's protest that went wrong, no matter who was at fault, one has to expect the temporary police state that has been enacted on Denver and Minneapolis. I want to see as many people as possible protest in Minneapolis this week, but I also think police and city leaders have no other choice to ensure the safety of RNC attendees and their property.
I personally would like to light the baggage of a few Republicans on fire, stab a few tires of their busses, and otherwise show my rage at the party of the most heinious and reprehensible president this country has EVER seen. But I realize that to do so would only make the liberal cause look bad, and badly hurt the effectiveness of the liberal cause.
There is documented evidence that the police have horrifically overstepped their bounds, behaved brutally and in confiscating computers, behaved illegally. I hope and believe that those incidences were isolated and not the intended pattern of behavior of the police responsible for maintaining safety of the convention participants. I hope and believe those officers responsible will receive appropriate reprimands and discipline.
I hope that these protests are powerful, effective, and free of harm to the participants of those protests, or the participants of the convention. Free speech is a fantastic thing, a wonderful right, but with that right comes the responsibility to behave in a way that does not imply or threaten the safety of others.
Naming their protest group "Recreate 68" was irresponsible, stupid and largely the reason we are experiencing this temporary police state at the Democratic and Republican conventions.

Holy WOW!! if you think the dnc rally was bad this is going to be worse!!
dabne says: "I love how the girl starts out by saying they are just "5 happy people, minding their own business," and then she says they "Politically Aware People," and then it turns out there are 23 people in the home with fireworks in September"
Whats wrong with being polically aware?? and what does having a party with fireworks (one year ago)have anything to do with a search and seizure??and for huntre's post... the article has mainly circumstantial evidence.... rusty tools, buckets of liquids, these seem to me trivial. as for the jagged metal thats another thing but if they knew who these people are then why not wait till they try to bring this stuff to the convention?? We can only wait and see what evidence, if any, they have to prove the items were to be used in such a manner.

Fascist dictatorship is easier to swallow when it is presented in incremental incidents like this.
"A lap-top confiscated here, a highway checkpoint there and the police raid yesterday."
It's easier for the corporate dictatorship to take over by slowly chipping away. This was the lesson they learned from the Nazis.

I wonder how many people remember all the stories about the RNC Welcoming Committee and their much publicized plan to disrupt the RNC, key word here being publicized. Therefore it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the police are taking a preemptive strike on their “threats.”
That being said if anyone needs to really question whether America is moving toward a police state let me remind you of that $50 million federal grant for security for the DNC. Yes in this day and age the federal government is so shell shocked from the threat of box cutter wielding religious dudes that tax payers have to fork up fifty big ones to protect the DNC from equally none threatening (in my opinion) peaceniks.
Marilynn would have us believe the DNC was absolutely perfect. Well as the video I uploaded will show if absolutely perfect means arresting fifteen year old protestors armed with bio-degradable, non-toxic terror chalk then I guess she’s bat shit crazy. Also the idea that Blackwater somehow has the legal authority to conduct police style raids outside of a national emergency is also a little out there. I’m pretty sure this was a police job since the video is titled “Police raid of peace protestors.”

Well apparently you don't believe that these arrests and intimidation were justified. So why are you trying to defend an unjustifed police action in MN based on an unjustified police action in Denver?? Either they are both right or both wrong. Make up your mind.

Ricky84:
I never defended the actions of the police department against the RNC welcoming committee. I attempted to clarify the reason why they were raided. Personally I think the RNC welcoming committee is great however at the same time their egotistical dumb assess for broadcasting their intent over the internet.
Now you can split hairs all you want in regard to the actions of the police in dealing with the welcoming committee although that really wasn’t the purpose of my post in the first place. I attempted to counter the argument in support of the DNC’s security by comparing the unjustifiable response to a minor with sidewalk chalk verses the self publicized malicious intent of the RNC welcoming committee.
In both cases the question of overt police aggression can be raised however by comparing the two events it should come as a no brainer which event stands out over the other. So therefore in an online discussion where the idea of a police state is raised I felt the need to question the judgment of a person who assumes the DNC went off without a hitch.

Yes, they do. The San Francisco police had a stakeout in our place of business watching the gun shop across the street. They were expecting a murderer to come there to get a new barrel for his uzi. They told me that the criminals usually had better big weapons than them. Because they depend on confiscated guns for theirs.

Where is the other side to this story?
I love how the girl starts out by saying they are just "5 happy people, minding their own business," and then she says they "Politically Aware People," and then it turns out there are 23 people in the home with fireworks in September"
Again, nothing wrong with organizing a good old fashioned protest. But where is the police side to the story. They had a warrant. And yes police do use machine guns.
Nobody was arrested, nobody detained. I don't see how this justifies "a police state." A police state is when there is no warrant and police arrest or detain with no reason.
I would be interested in what the police have to say. That would really balance a story like this. This is only one side. I'll look for the other side.

I too would be very interested in what the police had to say. If they didn't arrest anyone, what was the purpose of the raid?? Normally when the police come crashing into your home they have a reason to do so. Here it seems the movitivation was pure intimidation. This bullshit is NOT supposed to happen in the United States of America. Protesting and free speech is a right, not a priviledge granted by the power elite.

Dmitri_Molotov..".Blackwater is a military private contractor firm. There's a hell of a lot more money to be made in Iraq than in Minneapolis arresting college students. Everyone knows that it's cheaper to use the police than hire mercenaries. They may base their moral stance entirely on money, but it's got to be a LOT of money. Blackwater is out of the question for this incident. Cops are cheaper and look better in the news."
Wrong. Blackwater is now patrolling our border and they have a big fat Homeland Security contract for just such things as protests. Dressed like a SWAT team sounds like Blackwater. If something like a big protest happens you watch who comes in to control the crowd. Remember who patrolled the streets in New Orleans after Katrina? More important remember Germany?

If that's true then the DHS is getting scammed.... thanks Blackwater! The great thing about mercenaries is that you can buy them. I'm a bit more comfortable with Blackwater doing this kind of thing than actual government agents, because they can't be bought (as easily).

I wouldn't say the DNC was perfect since there are incidents at every one. More than just Code Pink.
The DNC in Denver was the site of several quite ugly incidents where law enforcement acted on behalf of Democratic Party officials and the corporate elite that funded the Convention to keep the media and protesters from doing anything remotely off-script.
Police in Denver arrested an ABC News producer as he and a camera crew were attempting to take pictures on a public sidewalk of Democratic senators and VIP donors leaving a private meeting at the Brown Palace Hotel.
But it doesn't bode well if the RNC hasn't even started yet and there are already arrests. I guess they haven't gotten over the policy of pre-empive strikes and that is very scary in and of itself.
Targeting people with automatic-weapons-carrying SWAT teams and mass raids in their homes, who are suspected of nothing more than planning dissident political protests at a political convention and who have engaged in no illegal activity whatsoever, is about as redolent of the worst tactics of a police state as can be imagined.

Research them. You will find that yes, they are big enough. They are huge. They have a Homeland Security contract for things like protests and border patrol. Plus they dress in black just like a SWAT team. Most police forces can't afford the kinds of weapons those people described the officers as carrying.

I have a question. Are they really protesters? Im wondering if they just gathered up a bunch of (Democrats?) People to try to garner sympathy? Hells Bells our convention was absolutely perfect. Why would anyone bother trying to screw theirs up? They have done a magnificent job already by choosing their lame ass candidates. I smell Karl Rove. (on edit: the protestors highlighted in this article are from the group 'Food not Bombs')
Yes, they are protestors. And not just from Minnesota mind you. Check the link, from a mother of one of the protestors.
It's scary. Really really scary.
Please note: There's been talk (on DU) that the youtube video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njxmbOitsb8 ) created enough suspicion to deem a raid necessary ... but that doesn't explain the other raids. Warrentless raids at that. Not by a long shot.
Trust, I'll not be intimidated ... even though I have to work that night (I work in the printed news industry, which isn't going so great right now). If I get arrested and am a no-show, I'll be fired. I *always* planned on peaceful dissent. I'd also planned on taking my camera. I've changed my mind on that last part.
